I have lost about 50 lbs the last few months of dieting and working out. I want to know if protiens good or bad? I know its good but will it slow my weight loss? I would still count it in my daily calorie intake, right now I only eat 1500 calories a day. I would be taking "Body fortress super advanced whey protien" can anyone help me that knows about this area? I read on a few websites i should consume .7 grams of protien per pound of my body because it helps me burn fat and not muscle and that leucine thats in my protien powders good because it also tells the body to burn fat and not muscle. What do you guys think?

Protein is definitely not something you should avoid..It will help you keep your muscle, which burns more cals than fat, and protein will also keep you fuller longer thus indirectly helping in weight loss as well. If you aren't trying to build muscle or something it shouldn't be hard to get the amount of protein you need without powder, though protein is protein...Eat more chicken!

By the way it's not .7-1g of protein per pound of your body but per pound of your lean body mass, which is going to be somewhat less than how much you actually weigh.

yea, the amounts of proteins people say always seems to be an issue of conflict. what the person above me has said is entirely correct.

What I've heard is for everyday living and maintenance; half of your body weight in grams of protein is sufficient.

As someone who is trying to build muscle while losing weight, I follow the guideline of the .7-1 gram per pound.

Also, it doesn't really matter what brand you use, just go with whatever has the fewest calories with the most grams of protein. Supplement companies try to lure people in with their "complex formula".

My checklist: Good concentration of protein and price.

If you want to lose weight, having muscle will help you, your body needs more calories to maintain and use muscle so you want to have muscle unless you like not eating anything.

You need good protein to maintain and buld muscle so yes, you do need protein, you will find it very hard to build and maintain muscle without it.

Your a women right? just to add please don't worry about "bulking up", you have only a certain amount of the hormones required to build up heavy amounts of muscle in your system and unless your eating and drinking vast amounts of growth hormones in your food, your not going to be able to become a body builder- all body builders have to dramatically alter their food or add in heaps of protein stuffs and other hormonal things to get the bodies they have, you cannot be the one person in the world to buck th trend and not need to take all those pills and forumlaes so please don't worry!

The going rate is 1 to 1.5grams of protein per kilo of body weight every day. A tuna steak weighing about 150 grams will have in about 30 grams of protein, you have to do the math to work out what is good and bad if you only have a limited amount of calories to eat with.

Some forms of protein are poor quality, try not to look on the back of a packer of say pasta and think "oh I can use that for my protein intake", its not good quality it is protein but wont help you much, try to stick to dairy, meat, soya... stuff that is protein rich and will help you more. Don't waste your calories on inferior protein hoping it will help!

Just to add a little.

Proteins are not only good for keeping muscle which will burn fat etc. proteins are needed for you to even live, and when people talk about poor and good proteins what they should be saying is complete and incomplete proteins.

The short story is that proteins break down into amino acids and there are 8 essential amino acids and 3 more that are sometimes essential depending on your siuation, what this means is that your body can't synthesize them and without them you will get very sick :)

Luckily, all meat, fish and dairy has complete proteins, eggs too (so pasta made with eggs actually have excellent proteins, pasta in general is just not very good for dieting due to the high caloric and low fiber content). Usually you compare the protein content to eggs actually because eggs are extremely efficient for getting the essential amino acids.

The short answer tho is yes, you need proteins, no, they are not bad. (unless you complete overeat them and drink too little water and have kidney problems, then you'll get sick too... but I don't believe those three are true?)

Best regards.

Sorry!:leaving: I guess I just see so many women wanting to lose weight- that combined with your very low calorie intake- most men seem to be able to get away with somewhere around the 1800-2000 mark when trying to lose weight (men are apparently supposed to eat 2500 just to maintain their weight as they naturally have more muscle and so more calories are required just to keep them standing)

I hope I didn't offend you! :icon_bs:

Nooooo.

People are supposed to eat the correct amount of calories for their body types and level of activity. There is no such thing as a fixed number of calories that works for all men/all women.

A small, slender man might require the same amount of calories as a tall muscular woman.

Calories are based on each individual's height/weight/level of activity. Gender is only a very minor part of that equation.

OK, point taken, it was a rough generalisation- men do tend to need more then women calorie wise as (in general terms) men have more muscle then women and muscle requires more calories to be maintained then body fat. But if a women has more muscle then her male counterpart then yes your right, she would require more calories then a skinny bloke.:iamwithstupid:
