Protein Timing

Real Quick Question...

How important is it to take your protein shake or whatever within 30 minutes after your workout?

I end up taking mine an hour to an hour and a half after a lot of times. I'm sure its not as effective, but it still has to be helping somewhat right? I had read somewhere that its worthless if you take an hour or more after, but I didn't believe that.

Thanks for any help.

Its not "worthless", though its not AS effective. But either way your body will use the protien as long as your not overloading it with them, which can be tough on your kidneys.

I try to drink my PWO shake imediately after working out, then do very mild cardio (such as running) cause i just think keeping your blood flowing helps, and it helps reduce cramps.

Sincerely,
Wilhelm.

I've never seen any substantial evidence to suggest that a big protein consumption can damage the kidneys in healthy people. And I've been reading quite a bit on protein.

Do you have carbs with your protein? or just protein? I'd try to get it as close to work out as possible.

It may not. My doctor just told me that extensive excess protien puts unwanted stress on the kidneys. And i just said okay and made sure i wasn't.

Either way if you have excess it would suck to be wasting your time with protien you really don't need.
lol.

Sincerely,
Wilhelm.

You'll just use it as energy, and you need energy, so you wouldn't be wasting anything (you will actually always use some protein as energy, specially if you train)

Protein by itself after a workout is almost useless.

Exercise causes your blood sugar levels to go down.

Protein by itself has no effect on blood sugar levels.

Therefore your blood sugar will stay low and the protein cannot be utilized.

Primarily carbs and protein in a 6:1 or 4:1 ratio is better.

Carbs raise blood sugar.

Raised blood sugar raises insulin.

Insulin shuttles nutrients to muscles.

Not very hard to understand, people think protein just magically turns to muscle? No.

It's true that insulin helps protein into the muscles, but I don't think you actually need it, so it wouldn't be totally useless. The protein will be utilized, just not as quickly.

But yeah, I'd definately want to add some carbs to my PWO to get my glycogen stores up and running again and to get insulin up to help the protein.

I use ON Pro Complex Gainer
60g protien
85g carbs
per one scoop

and the scoops aren't like 7 cups. lol. I only pay about $55 a months supply.

This stuff sounds good...whats the difference between this and just straight up whey protein though?

I'm currently about 5 foot 10, 150 lbs, pretty nicely built/toned, but I would like to gain 10-15 lbs more muscle. Is whey better or this stuff?

I'm working out like Mon-Thurs as well.

Pickles also help reduce cramps. Just to say to Wilhelm. Running is also good to help keep the juciyness flowing (your blood)

It could really be anything with potassuim. I remember someone telling me that potassium will help keep cramps away. And i just looked. A box of raisans is really efficeint in potassium. and its easy to take to the gym.
