protein supplements (nonwhey)

I became a vegetarian (no fish or tofu either) and my hair is falling out. My pharmacist said that I need a protein supplement that isn't plant based like the whey protein (which I've been getting a ton of.) Does such a thing even exist?

you can get casein protein either naturall occuring in cottage cheese or milk (which i personally do not recommend). Or you can buy it in powdered form.

Okay, I'm not really into this protein stuff for the weight gain or anything. Neither of these will cause me to be a huge muscler person, right? Also... these are both different kinds of animal based protein, not plant based? Thank you both.

Rice protein isolate is not animal based. Protein is an essential macro nutreint and your experiencing it first hand.

Casein comes from milk.

Unless your training very hard and eat a caloric surplus you will not gain muscle mass.

After looking over your orginial post i'd say there's only 2 types of protein. Animal based and plant.

However, i'm not totally sure.

Kinds of protein i know:

Milk based - Casein, Micellar Casein, Whey
Plant - Rice, Soy
Egg protein (what about that?)

Egg protein

Hope this helps. :)

Will i'm not sure but milk comes from an animal and i'm sure eggs do. :)

You must of been taking soy protein? I think whey is animal based frankly.

I agree.

Cow -> Milk -> Whey

First of all, I think you would classify yourself as vegen, if you won't consume any animal products.

Vegens really do themselves a disservice. The only high sources of protein come from animals. NOTE: I don't consider soy because there is too much controversy around it right now.

Legumes and grains should hopefully help. That's things like red beans and rice, peanut butter and whole grain breads, etc.

As far as I understand.. No single vegetable contains the essential amino acids required by our bodies. However, you should look into combinations. By eating certain vegetables together you can actually get the 8 required aminos. While this may not be as easy as downing a whey shake, you have made a decision to do it this way and it's important that you know it is possible to reach your protein requirements and stay true to your beliefs/lifestyle. :)

You need to see a nutrionist. Your problem is that you're not getting all the essential amino acids you need to stay healthy, because of your strict vegan diet. for anyone who eats meats, eggs and dairy this is never a problem (barring genetic disorders).

Its my understanding that it IS possible to eat only soy and other vegetable proteins and get everything you need. You'll have to eat lots of legumes, beans, nuts, some soy...and its possible you still might need to take a supplement.

dieticians/nutritionists are trained in this kind of stuff. doctors and pharmacists are not.
