Protein Shakes

I do not use protein shakes now but I am planning on starting to use them. Do you really need them or can you just eat the right foods. Would you recommend taking a protein shake.

you should recover with a minimum of 20 grams of protein within 90 mins of working out. However you do that is your choice.

Do you know how much protein you eat in a day? Can you give us a few more details about what protein you eat and how much you eat throughout the day? A protein shake is not a necessity unless you really can't get enough protein, or if you are trying to use protein after a workout, for recovery, and you can't/don't want to bring whole foods with you to eat after a workout.

Look at the basic nutritional information on a protein shake. It'll have about 1,000 different amino acids listed on it...forget about them, and just look at the total protein, carb and fat content. Now look at the nutritional information on a bottle of skim milk. If you've got a weightgainer supplement in front of you, the basic information will look almost similar. If you've got a cutting supplement in front of you, it'll be more or less the same, but with less sugar. The protein shake might (MIGHT) have a better amino acid profile than plain old ordinary milk, but until you're an advanced athlete, it doesn't really matter, because any animal product is going to have a very good amino acid profile regardless. Besides, whey protein (probably the most popular/common protein shake, followed by casein) is a dairy by-product, anyway. Personally, 95% of the time I'll just take the milk. Hasn't hurt me yet.

Do you need a protein shake? No, probably not. Would it be helpful to have one? Probably. Can you get the same benefits without one? Probably.

Hi There!

Protein is one of the body's main building blocks for muscle,
skin, bone, and other tissues.protein shakes come in many combinations of protein,
fats, and carbohydrates, protein shakes are used mainly by athletes
who need nourishment right after their workouts.
they help the body recover from intense exercise.
a fuel source for exercise, which gets used up during workouts.
Protein shakes do this mainly by restoring muscle glycogen,
protein shakes can also help repair damage to muscles
that can occur with serious bodybuilding.

Protein plays almost zero role in providing the body with energy and glycogen, except in the case of starvation. The carbohydrates are what do that, but you don't want to be drinking protein shakes before the workout. Something as simple as juice or a granola bar will fill that role.
