Sport Protein Shakes

Sport Fitness
Hi Everyone!
I am a bit confused about Protein Shakes.
Are you suppose to drink them before your workout or after. My workout is a combo of cardio and light weight lifting. (I am a female).

Does it make a difference if you have the shake for lunch or directly after a workout?

Thanks!

It depends on what you are trying to do with them. For the most part they are used as meal replacements. If you are a hard core body builder, you should have whey protien after a workout.

For your purposes it probably doesn't really matter. I would use them sparingly as a meal replacement.

Actually, it does matter...

If it is solely a protein shake (19 grams or more of protein in each serving), then it should be taken after a workout.
A meal replacement shake contains carbohydrates, protein, and fat in a specific ratios to mimick a meal (hence the name). That can be taken throughout the day.

Its better to have some food before work out. (1hr)
I find that if I just got on shakes and drinks I get really dizzy.

Protien shakes are for right after your workout before you even get showered. You dont want your muscles to starve, while yor haveing a shower, getting dressed and driving home.

I have a protien shake asap, then some food when I get home.

Even meal replacement shakes and no substitute for a health diet.

you should consume a pro/carb shake immediatly following your weight training as this is the time that your body is in it's most anabolic state.

Im concerned about the statement "My workout is a combo of cardio and light weight lifting. (I am a female)."

WHAT? :D :D

It doesn't matter. If your goal is to drop body fat then you should be lifting a heavy enough weight that your muscles feel fatigued on the last rep. You should feel as though you cannot do one more rep without sacrificing form.

Good luck to you!

I agree - there is such a HUGE misconception when it comes to female training. Alot of females think that if they lift heavy that they will get big.

HUGE misconception.

A trainer at 24 hr told me the same, drink a protein shake right after working out. but not to eat within 2 hours before.

would this be the same if I am working out right before bed? would that protein help build my muscles as I sleep?

I take my shakes before and after work out.
Good wheypowder contains a good amount of BCAA (branched chain amino acids) that prevent your body from burning up any muscles at all.
The first I drink an hour before workout and the other immediately after.
