Protein Shake Before Workout

I have read that I should be taking some kind of protein boost (ie Shake) just after working out to benefit muscle building. If I workout for 50 minutes and do 20 min of cardio afterwards, am I getting the benefit from the shake if I drink it before I workout or is it gone by then?
 
the benefit will be minimized, since a whey shake is going to be mostly digested after 50 mins...you won't have that rush of nutrients right when the body needs it most.

its also better if you can weight train and do cardio on different days or with a longer rest period between.
