Should you take a protein shake after a cardio workout?

Yea, there is a lot of research out there that says you need more protein if you do a lot of cardio.

No no no.

You should consume protein and carbs after a workout. If this has got to be in the form of a protein shake then so be it, but tis always better to eat whole foods.

Your muscles require Glycogen when working out, which comes from Carbs. Your body does not require a heap of protein all of a sudden after a workout. This is a Myth that to many people still believe in.

There is no sudden burst of muscle-making after a workout. Building muscle tissue is a 24+ hour process, so getting Balanced protein throughout the day is far more Important than right after a workout. You only require a very small amount of protein to replace That which was burned as energy . The most important nutrient after a workout is carbohydrates. While muscle repair takes as much time as 24 - 72 hours after a workout, there is a small time slot of a few hours where your muscles are most ready to intake carbohydrates that were depleted during the workout.

I wrote this when talking about resistance training, but the same applies to cardio

Gatorade to the rescue!!

I used to get into protein etc after lifting weights followed by cardio or just doing cardio. The one problem with taking protein powder etc after running is you put the weight you just burned off back on well as far as calories... So figure if your protein shake has 120 calories per serving then of course doing cardio etc 3 to 4 times a week puts on 360 to 480 calories which makes you work two to three times as hard to burn it off!!

I found Gatorade (02) is best for me during a cardio run. Gatorade has electrolytes and carbs (14g) plus dextrose. I would give Gatorade a try it also gives you the glycogen levels back you need. It checks in at 50 calories per I believe 8 oz serving.

anyone got more info?

how about taking l-glutamine post cardio too?

those that are saying one should have whole foods after cardio what meal is best?
