protein help!

i have been looking into adding a protein supplement into my diet. i am in good shape but have been trying to gain more strength to help in rock climbing which i am just starting to learn. i go to the gym 5 days a week but i dont eat much meat and honesly my diet is not the greatest. i went to the local gnc the other day and was overwhelmed by the choices. the guy behind the counter was really not much help. he went on and on about the most expensive muscle supplement in the store and didnt answer any other questions. so basically my main questions are, can you have to much protein and although this may sound silly is there a difference between the protein supplements made for men vs womens formulas? are there all natural proteins that are just as good as the manufactured ones? any help would be appreciated since the salesman seemed more interested in making a sale then helping out

First, you should know that a protein powder alone won't do much to help you out with more strength - your diet should be the first in check. Having that said, don't be concerned about having too much protein - you won't be hitting that amount. On the same note, don't be worrying about male or female formulas for protein, they should be the same. My recommendation would be to get some Optimum Nutrition - I've recommended it hundreds of times and still do, it's great stuff.

So as to not start ANOTHER thread on protein, how often should whey protein shakes be taken if the person taking them finds it difficult to eat a lot of protein rich foods during the day?

Also should you be getting a higher protein intake on days you workout or the same protein intake every day?

You should have around the same protein intake on all days, considering that you are getting your recommended amount - aim for about 1g per lb of body mass.

Figure two shakes maximum for the whey protein, you should be getting most of it from whole foods anyway. :)
