I was diagnosed with a prolactinoma a few years back (benign pituitary tumour) after an MRI scan showed it up as I hadn't had a period for over 6 months. I was put on Cabergoline tablets (Dostinex) for 2 years until my prolactin levels went down to an acceptable level. I am now told my prolactin levels have gone up again, so am going for blood tests in a few weeks time to confirm if I need to go back on the meds.
My feeling is that my high prolactin levels are stopping me from losing weight. I did lose some weight when I was taking the cabergoline but not much as I was also overeating and not exercising at the time. As prolactin is the breastfeeding hormone surely it must make your body lay down fat stores, as its like you're pregnant or lactating? I've also had an increase in bra size over the last 10 years so am wondering if it could be related. Would like to hear if anyone else has this condition and what their feelings are with regard to prolactinoma and the weight loss problem.
