Precor 5.21i help

Bought this last winter and it worked perfectly. We never use it during the summer and when we tried to use it again this fall the resistance wouldn't work correctly. The readout shows it going from 1-20 as requested but we don't feel it getting any harder than the very easiest (R-1). Am I missing something here or is it really broken? The incline works and everything on the info pod appears to be fine.

Precor has a great warrranty, get ahold of them and let them fix it.

I just finished the training at Precor to become a factory certified tech, and it sounds like there is a problem with the eddie current resistance system. Basically, you are driving a disc that is spinning at a high rate of speed though an electromagnet. The magnet induces a current into the disc which creates another magnet field that fights the magnet... making resistance. I would guess that there is a problem with the magnet, wiring harness, or the motor controller.

Does the display show strides counted? There will not be any resistance if the computer does not see the speed sensor.

Hope this helps.

If it is under warranty, call Precor. They will dispatch a tech to you.

Hello DelFit,

I wonder if you could enlighten us here.

We own an elliptical machine, not Precor's, that sprinkles black dust on the machine itself and the floor mat. We are now very concerned because it looks like tiny particles of metal that we could end up inhaling while breathing heavy on the elliptical. We know the disc has a tiny magnet but that is for reading the speed and feeding the data to the console. As we assembled it, there was an electrical wire (for the data feed) and just a cable which I think was for the resistance. We don't exactly know where the dust is coming from.

While you are dealing with an elliptical, bicycle or any other similar fitness equipment, has there ever been a case where the disc area sprinkles black dust, maybe a piece of magnet or metal? Has there ever been a case where the pedal area spews black dust?

Regards,
Bonnie

What brand do you have?

zr 900....I have the same Precor model as you. I've had the same problem with mine if I've let it sit for months. I've been able to correct the problem by turning off the machine/unplugging it and then plugging it back in after a minute. It seems to reset the magnetic mechanism that provides the resistance. Good luck!
