Weight-Loss Pre & post & during workout drinks

Weight-Loss
I've been going to the gym, 5 days/week for almost a year now. BTW I've dropped 50 lbs over that period.
I see all kinds of younger (I'm 64) guys putting additives in their water before the workout.

Do these have any measurable effect, or are they just psychological or hype?

Personally I've never bothered to even drink during my workout.
I choose to re-hydrate afterwards.
My workouts are about an hour, so I don't find it necessary to take water during the session.
If I was on an afternoon hike, then I would take water for both me & my dog, but in an AC gym, just not necessary. IMHO.

They will be a range of things. If you're doing a hard workout and sweating a lot then youll lose vitamins and minerals through sweating. Sports drinks and supplements claim to replenish these and some do but some also give you a good dose of sugar with it (which the average joe losing weight doesn't want). The more carb heavy ones are also supposed to boost your energy to workout longer and not get fatigued so quick. A lot of guys just get them because they don't like the taste of plain water but I haven't found anything to convince me that they provide any measurable benefit and rather stick with water. Others will be drinking protein supplements before during and after workouts. If your nutrition and hydration is good thrghout the day then youre fine but personally I try to get a good drink of water 20 mins before I workout and get through a small bottle of plain water when I workout anyway because I know im losing fluid.

Thanks for the feed back. I trained in Judo for 25 years, & it was always training hard, then drink water.
Perhaps my body is just used to it. I do perspire heavily when I'm doing cardio (elliptical, stair climber or arc trainers).
But I don't have dry mouth or the urge to drink during a 45 minute cardio session.
I do hydrate throughout the day drinking about 6 glasses (1.5 litres) of water between breakfast (6:00 am) & when I hit the gym (4:30 pm).

re- Have you considered the potential benefits of consuming BCAA's before a workout?
Yes of course I have, but that not why I asked the question!
From what I've read, Branched Chained Amino Acids need to be consumed at least 1/2 to 1 hr or in the meal before the work out or post workout.
Not immediately before or during the work out.

BCAA's digest quickly as they bypass the liver and gut and go directly into the bloodstream which I believe is why some suggest consuming them during your workout. Taking in isoleucine, leucine, and valine during your workout can help to improve endurance and delay the onset of fatigue, and make better use of fat stores for energy (assuming you're in a carb depleted state). Plenty of people in my gym (including myself sometimes) sip on a BCAA drink while lifting, but perhaps it depends on what you're doing while you're there (weights vs. cardio maybe)
