Playing with ankle weights

is it safe to do. i heard it will eventually help you play faster and jump higher after you have use the ankle weights

i use ankle weights for my leg lifts, that's about it. but i've only heard good things about them.. i also heard that if you run with them they sometimes irritate (sp?) the skin

Word of warning: ankle weights have been linked to hip and knee problems. The body isn't accustomed to having to exert energy to move weight in the area (unlike arms and chest).

I'd just as soon just do extra reps/distance with what I've got than run the risk of that. Same goes for lifting belts.

well..

then i might as well stop wearing my ankle weights. I got those nike lightweight ones and wore them while i was in my house.

i thought that wearing extra weights would make the casual walks into an exercise.

I have a pair of ankle weights i worked out with today. I ran 4 150 meter sprints on the track with them. I had about 6 pounds in each but i think im going to take some weight out. I think as long as you dont have too much weight they can be ok. Just dont run with them too much. Or you can use jump soles. I also ran 4 150 meter sprints with those today too.

i was thinking about playing basket ball with them on, would that be safe? i heard that it will help you jump higher and play faster, is that true?

yeah, they're really terrible for your joints.

I'd imagine that for training for jumps, they're not all that bad -- but I'd probably go with a weight belt or pack over ankle weights. Less joint damage, but you're still loading your axial skeleton.

There are much better ways you can train. For basketball, circuit training with squats and plyojumps would be much better than ankle weights.

I perform kata with ankle weights to improve my speed and power in my kicks and punches. I don't do it often or for extended periods of time though.

seriously dont use them while doing too much, if your jogging or sumthing ok, but once you overdo it, you can have serious muscle problems, where sum muscles get destroyed and stuff, dont play with them, only training, hope it helped :)

If you're wearing while you walk around all the time, you'll be off balance permanently. It will totally screw you up. Only use them for short periods of time, like during exercise. Good idea using em with leg raises, i'm gonna start doing that.

They are better and more designed for slower and more controlled actions. It would be unwise to strap a pair on and start swinging your leg around doing kicks. There is a lot that can go wrong.

Do this real quick as you read this. Wrap your right hand around your lift finger and pull on it ten times quickly. That is what ankleweights do when you walk with them.

They are great for all manner of exercise other than moderate or longer distance running or walking. DO NOT WEAR THEM ALL DAY! That is a surefire wat to get backpain real quick. Some people are lucky when they start on that and they hurt their knees first and stop wearing them. The back problems it causes are horrible. Use them for general aerobics and short distance running. If you must wear them all day keep them on your wrists but pay attention to your shoulders. I own two pair myself. Use with caution each time and have fun
