Pilates Peril - does anyone know...

Hello.
I'm not sure if I'm doing the whole Winsor Pilates thing correctly or not. To be honest, I thought I'd be a lot more sore after starting it, and I'm not. So, I wonder if I'm doing it correctly.

ALSO.....Is my weight getting in the way of doing it correctly? There are a couple of the exercises I just cannot do like the video shows. I'm wondering if it's my stomach getting in the way.

I have discovered - to my dismay - that I have what seems to be absolutely NO abdominal muscles. NONE. There is this thing called the roll-up. It's impossible right now. I'm hoping that as I continue to do Pilates, I'll get some abdominal muscles and be able to do that exercise.

I feel like Pilates is helping, if ever so slightly and I know I need to tone and build muscle without bulking up. Maybe I just need someone to say, "Keep it up. You'll be happy you did."

Thanks
PG

Hey there,

You shouldn't ever really be sore after pilates...not sore like you would be after a weight/strength session.

Pilates is great, I did windsor pilates for ages after my little boy was born and found it has given me great core strength.

Now I through the pilates exercises into my other strength training...the roll up is great for you abdominals...as is the hundred...

Keep it up it is well worth it for toning and strength!

Hope this helps

As a person who used to live life by windsor pilates I can tell you that from pilates you will not be sore. Chances are if your sore then that is more likely evidence of doing it wrong. Since pilates is a core workout you will feel taller and stronger within weeks. Trust me when i say that the results will come soon enough. It is like any other work out it will take 6-12 weeks for results but within a few weeks you will feel the tallness and strong feeling. I do hope this helps. Stick with it!!! One more thing yes your weight will make some positions seem akward but then what is it helping not to do them at all. I always say that you will tell results when the positions come easier.

I was also thinking abuot pilates and thought that maybe I should do some slimming up first then move on to pilates

I tried a few Pilates tapes before, and my muscles were really-really sore during the exercises, to the point of not being able to finish them, but I figure something is better then nothing, and I did have some soreness afterwards, but not too much. I have to warn you be careful with curlup. Use only your ab muscles to do it, and don't force it. My muscles got really fatigued after doing a couple of them, and for the rest of duration of exercise, I must have used my back. Well, I ended up hurting my back with that. So, be careful! Don't force anything if you can't do it. If you use only muscles and proper form, Pilates are supposed to be really good for your back.

To answer MRSKgrimes, for exercise, I would start slowly and just do walking for a while. If you do aerobics, do something very low impact - like marching, moving your arms, your legs, etc. No step aerobics or anything... Check with your doctor on Pilates, since you have back problems. It should be good enough, but you never know. Also, even aerobics and walking can put stress on your back, so you may want to start very slow and do only 10 min at a time.
