pilates newbie

hello! i decided today to look for a fitness forum that will give me support and will answer all my dumb little questions. ;)
instead of next years resolutions, i will start today. i will try pilates and a healthier life style. i need to get fit, i am only 20 and i feel like as if i'm a 70 year old woman. ----so not acceptable
i am 5'7'' and am between 137 - 140.5 lbs. depends of the day, i guess. it's different everyday. my bmi is 21.5, i'm in the middle, so i guess that means that i am at a healthy weight?!
i also quit smoking last week, i feel a lot better already. i have to replace my bad habits with good habits, not so easy but i'll try :D

talk to you later guys!

Another bad habit to drop would be pilates and then take up some light cardio until you can do anaerobics. If you can walk briskly, you do not need pilates. Start weight training as soon as you can and as you eat more of the good food keep the bad food far away. Eat at least three times a day but the more meals you break it into the better. A better life is coming for you. So smile and celebrate all of your positive decisions

pilates is bad for you? i never heard of that, can you explain to me why? i can walk fast for like 20 mins but after that my legs feel like rubber
i dont want to weight train too much, i dont want to turn into a guy and lose my boobs  i'm afraid of that ;)
thank you for your answer!!!

read more on this forum ... u need to weight train to get the results u want ... its not gonna make u look like a guy or loose ur boobs silly :)

Congrats on quitting smoking ... i quit 6 months ago ... so funny now how gross it is to see people smoke and blow smoke near my face, etc ... here in Austin,TX they just made it illegal to smoke in any bar ... only outside ... horrible ... but it sure is nice to be able to breath and not wake up feeling like you smoked a pack of cigs from just having second hand smoke around u!!

In order to look like a guy with boobs you would need to make that your lifes mission and alter the way you eat, sleep, train, supplement and you would almost definately need to use drugs in order to maintain that manly look for two or three days max before you turn into a shapely woman again.

Assuming that lifting weights will turn you into a pro bodybuilder is not only wrong but deeply condescending of what female bodybuilders must endure for years leading up to contest.

As for pilates being bad for you, that is not quite the message I wanted to convey. You may already know the origin of pilates which is about a sickly man who was too weak to do any workout at all. Couldn't walk right, couldn't lift, couldn't do anything. So he made up pilates. After years of (intense??) training his doctors aggreed that he was slightly stronger than what they expected and he eventually became strong enough to walk briskly.

The effects of pilates are very subtle. They will not cause any dramatic effects in strength, fat loss, lung power or longevity. It is simply not signifficant enough. It is to be reserved to those people who are truely incapable of anything more. Though it could be argued that anything which exhausts you or sores the muscles without replenishing you with strength and vitality is a sapp of the bodies resources I will suffice it stand back and frown.

Now if you want to be stronger, slimmer, faster than you should do strength training, the most effective form of which is bodybuilding though if you are more concerned about lifting huge poundages (I doubt seriously that this is your goal) you could do powerlifting or if you are looking to improve muscular endurance and power a calistetic program may be in order provided you keep it intense. Far too many people go into calestetics and stop after a few push ups.

For faster weight loss cardio is the most traditionally trusted though many of todays experts feel that cardio training is obsolete. Now I personally have done more cardio in each of the last seven years than most people will do in their lifetimes and I belive that the best cardio is the most intese preferably anaerobic provided you have a strong heart (a strong spirit is important too but that mound of muscle in your chest needs to be strong for intense anaerobics)
Combinations are always good but pilates are simply obsolete.

Way to go on your ongoing quest of self embetterment. The lord smiles on and helps those who help themselves.
