Sport Peanut Butter

I have a quick question on peanut butter. I know the best and nutritious type would be an all natural butter or almond butter, but what if I just stuck with the plan ole creamy store brand peanut butter. I'm cutting back on my grocery bill and so some things have to go.

I've already added the nutrition label of the store brand peanut butter to my fit day and it fits within my hypo-caloric diet.

Is natural the only way to go or can I get by with the store brand?

Natural Peanut Butter (at least the Smucker's brand, with the ingredients only Peanuts and Salt) isn't all that expensive. I pay $1.99 per small jar and $2.40 for their larger jar. I do not know what your prices are there, but this is very competitive with the less desirable brands with undesirable ingredients. There are some "off brands" or store specific natural peanut butters out there, like Krogers at Dillions (which has peanuts and salt), but it tends to be extremely oily--almost too much--even after stirring it.

The purpose with Peanut Butter (at least with me, besides tasting good), is getting good fats in, and eliminating the bad fats. And, not withstanding the white sugar ingredient, some other brands can have hydrogenated oils in their ingredients, and this is less than desirable.

Look around for some good prices, and stick with the natural peanut butter varieties. And, be careful, not all of them that say they are "natural" are. Look at the ingredients carefully.

Best wishes

Take Chillen's advice. I am a Smucker's Natural convert, thanks to him. I have it every day. YUMMY

Me too! After searching for peanut butters on this site I found a lot of people like the smuckers stuff. It's now my fav as well, but the only place I can find it around here is in Target.. it's not even in any of our grocery stores wtf..

This needs to be said:

In the U.S, there has been a lot of Peanut Butter based products pulled because of Salmonella poisoning, ALL coming from one manufacture that distributes their PB paste to other companies (like Little Debbie, and Nabisco). Some persons have died and hundreds sickened. The factory has been shut down.

And, Smucker's Brands ARE NOT ONE OF THEM. They make their own products, and do not get there NPB paste from the factory in question.

Smucker's statement:

This list is here:

I have been eating Smucker's since this story broke a few weeks ago. And, still walking around........:)

ok well I thought I made a smart choice and picked up the reduced fat store brand creamy peanut butter. Didn't however get a chance to see chillen's post before I left for the store. The ingredients list is pretty extensive and not in a good way. Peanuts, corn syrup solids, soy protein, sugar, fully hydrogenated vegetable oils.

I was at the local walmart and picked this up for about $1.58 so I think $1.99 is reasonable. I only saw skippy, jif, and rees. and some all natural brands but they were around $4 bucks so no bueno. All thought if i remember correctly they did have smuckers jelly and ice cream toppings, crap like that but no peanut butter.

Thanks for the suggestion Chillen, I will most definitely keep that in mind on my next trip to the store.

Never heard of smuckers peanut butter...But this is the one i use.

Not sure if its any good though..

I couldn't locate the ingredients on the website. Do you have a jar you can quickly look at? Now stay out of........it.......just look at the ingredients slurping the sticky stuff down, is not allowed. :)

If you can find another product I would. It has White Sugar :)), LOL, which I personally despise), and what kind of veggie oil is this? Does it list it as: Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil? Do you have to stir this product? If you do not, it's most likely Hydrogenated, because this oil hardens at room temp (which is "one" of the reasons its put in PB) and turns to oily base when warmed.

Well, you didn't know, so do not be hard on yourself. This is the reason you made this thread correct? :)

Getting reduced fat Peanut Butter, just defeats the overall nutritional purpose of Peanut Butter. Which is primarily getting good polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats in the diet. The problem with Peanut Butter, is the fact that its calorie dense, which can eat up a large portion of your calories if you are not careful with it, but we simply have to deal with it.

A lot of people can get alarmed unnecessarily due to the oil separating from the core composite of the peanut, but this is a natural separation, and what you are actually observing is the good and healthy fat oil, and when Peanut butter is mixed with (say hydrogenated Veggie Oil, for example), you do not see it because it basically hardens at room temp.

I was at the local walmart

Look around a bit more. The wal-mart (s) we have nearby, have it in stock as well as more expensive brands.

I eat Smart Balance PB w/ Omega 3's. It has flax and palm oils added, and will seperate but not as much as just PB + salt.

Some people don't like the smart balance, but I find it to be just fine. I've tried a few different natural PBs and have not been a fan of them at all due to the oil separation.

Smart Balance is a good source of PB, but personally I do not like the taste. So, I buy Smucker's NPB and get the omegas (etc) from flax and fish oil gels.

I don't mind taking a few moments to stir it.

Ehh its not so much the stirring...its the runny nature when its on the bread. Not a fan of my PB dripping out from between the slices of bread on my sandwich as i try to eat it.
