Pamela's Diary

Well it is time to start something new so here I am. I heard about this site from a lady on an email list I'm on. I have been reading through things and figure why not, need to start somewhere. Seems like everything else I have tried just set me up for failure. I don't like diets that require me to count and it needs to be relatively easy for me. I work full time as an office assistant and have an active almost five year old that keeps me busy.

At 275 lbs it is very hard to be very active with your child and that is why I want to lost my weight. I want to have more energy and not have to tell her that mommy needs to rest. So here are my goals:

1) I want to lose a total of 120 lbs in two years give or take a few months
2) Lose 5 per month
3) Drink more water
4) Exercise more probably with walking. I'm not a runner and don't enjoy running. I can walk while my daughter rides her bike. Also walk during my lunch break at work.
5) Eat more healthy and not eat after 8:00 pm

I know my husband and daughter will support me, but I need to do this for myself and not rely on anyone else. I'm also hoping that this site will give me support and celebrate my successes :D and encourage me when I have a bad day :( . From what I have read so far this is just what you do.

It is Sunday night around 10 pm PST and so I will be starting tomorrow. I think I will use this diary as a way to vent my frustrations and as a food diary. Once I have everything written down I can look back and see where I need to improve. So for I have some great ideas for snacks. I am also hoping that as I change the way I cook and eat, my husband in a subtle way will lose weight as well and feel better. His work schedule makes it hard for him to excerise, but maybe just eating better will help in a small way.

Well I better get some sleep and wish me luck as I take this journey with you all. :)

Welcome Pamela :) i hope you find this site very helpfull in your journey. youve got a good plan and your goals are very realistic.2 yrs is a perfect amount of time to loose 120lbs, ive found that setting smaller goals withing your bigger goals helps you not get disscouraged(ive been there, trust me) :)
Your off to a good start good luck to you. i hope we can help :)

Welcome and good luck! It's always great to have another person joining. That gives me one more person to talk to and encourage. You sound like you have a great plan, so stick around and I'll be keeping an eye on you. :)

HI! Yes, your goals sound very realistic! We are all here to support you! We will be (hopefully)starting another 20 pound club here soon, so check it out!

I'm a mom too and I know how busy mom's are. You can fit more excersize into your day by doing small things. Park far away from the store and walk. Don't take elevators, take the stairs, go outside and play with the kids (i've been playing alot of soccer lately).

Also, I didn't realize till lately how important water is! Its really helped me with my weight loss. I've been getting into the habit of, when i eat, I take a bite, take a drink, take a bite, take a drink...it helps me feel fuller, faster!

It has been a almost a week since I last posted. I really do want to get into the habit of posting something everyday. I have to say that I did better in my eating this week. I seem to have made better choices and controlled my portion sizes. When I did get something quick from a fast food place I didn't large size it. That is a big accomplishment for me. I still need to corporate excerise into my day. I know there are a couple of ladies at work that go walking on their morning break, I think on Monday I will ask them if I can join them and make sure I have my tennis shoes with me.

I want to thank everyone who has responded and encouraged me. It has really helped.

Goals for this weekend:

Don't eat too much at my daughter's birthday party
Plan meals for next week
Plan for healthy snacks
Go for a walk

Today is another day and I hope everyone has a great weekend.

Hey congrats on controling the portion sizes. thats a biggie :) i hope you do join the ladies for a walk its such good exercise and to have someone you can do it with might help keep you motivated :) good luck with you goals for this weekend :)

Plan those meals! Get tupperware and premake portions of fruit parfaits with fresh fruit and low fat yogurt, make nice colorful salads, portion your salad dressings, divide anything and everything you can into convient little cups and bags and what not and it is so much easier to get into a groove! You can do it! I started at 240 and I'm down to 190 in six months just on watching my portions and calories, giving my body healthy foods, and moderate exercise. Newbride is right, water is a key!

I would have to say that yesterday was really successful. Had my daughter's birhtday party. I did not eat any pizza, but did have a slice of cake. After the party we went out to eat and I got a bamboo steamer of fresh vegetables and a grilled chicken breast. It was great. I'm thinking I need a bamboo steamer, that things was pretty cool.

Today being Father's Day hubby wanted a donut so I had one of those and than for lunch had Japanese food. My lunch was chicken terrayakki with a california roll, veggie tempura and rice. I didn't eat the rice except what was on the roll. Donut was not a good idea, but we were on our way to church. Tonight we have small group and burgers are being grilled, but I will just stick to having one. Normally I would probably eat 2 or 3. I am founding out that as I control my portions I'm filling up faster and feel better cause I'm not over stuffed.

This afternoon while hubby goes to the movies with our daughter I'm going to do my grocery shopping for the week and get everything portioned so I'm not standing at the fridge wondering what I'm going to take for lunch or what to make for dinner. I want to have veggies all cut up and portioned so I can just grab a bag or container for a snack and also for lunch and snacks at work.

I do have a question. When you decided to change your eating habits did you find that at first you were hungry more? How long (and I know it is different for different people) did that feeling last to where you felt like you were in control? What things did you do to help curb hunger?

Thanks everyone for all the encouragement. I feel empowered.

Hey Pamela :)

When I first changed my eating habits I had some pretty nasty food cravings, even right after a meal. But that's likely because my meals used to be 4 times larger than they should have been. This time around it only took me about 4 days to feel perfectly satisfied all day long.

Pamela,
Welcome! I'm so glad you started a diary here. It is great, isn't it?
Keep focusing on your accomplishments. Notice and applaud yourself when you make better choices.
About the hunger thing... First of all, I wasn't really hungry and I knew that, the real question was dealing with the desire to put in more food.
Those first few days I had some lightbulb moments. The first was a friend said to me, "You know you don't need it. Work through it and get over it." The second lightbulb moment was while watching Dr. Phil. He asked a guest if she ever told herself, "No." I don't know what her answer was, but that really struck me. I don't think we tell ourselves No often. We are a nation of over-indulgers. We don't say No to much; especially food. I just started saying No to myself.
You can do it! Keep posting and happy birthday to your June Baby!

Golly can't believe it has been so long since I posted. Work has kept me so busy. Well how have I been doing since the last time. Not too bad. I get fuller sooner and have been keeping my portions under control. Just wish I had the time to excerise. I know I would probably lose weight faster if I would just get outside and do something. I really need to remember to bring my tennis shoes to work so I can walk at break time or my lunch. I am making better choices, not supersizing anything when we do grab a quick bite and I have lowered my intake of diet soda. I have hopes of just totally getting it out of my diet all together, but these things take time and babysteps. I have realized that I didn't not gain all this weight in one day and it will take more than one day to get it off. Babysteps, babysteps is my mantra. But I think I did lose at least a couple of pounds. I'll weight myself before bed tonight and see how I have been doing.

This week will be a challenge my daughter (5 years old) is having surgery on Thursday. She was born with a cleft lip and this is her second lip revision. It will be outpatient and I'll be able to bring her home as soon as she is ready, but I'm one of these stress eaters. So I will have to have healthy snacks already prepared so that I don't grab the chips or a candy bar at the hospital while I wait for her to get through surgery. Even this week up to the day I will have to work extra hard not to stress eat.

I did try one of those South Beach Diet Lunch Wrap kits that they have now. It was very good. If you have not tried them it has whole wheat tortillas (2 of them), ham and turkey, cheese, packet of mustard and sugar free jello. Everything was portioned out and is around 200 caleries. It was very tasty and I was full when I was done. I did purchase some of the frozen lunches and will try them this week. I'm looking for easy things to have at lunch and than that will leave me time to go for a walk during my lunch hour.

Ok for my goals this week:

Walk at least 3 days this week
Drink all my water
Choose water over soda
Pre-make all my snacks
Take healthier snacks to work so I'm not getting that candy bar
Take healthy snacks with me to the hospital

Ok well better get some sleep so I'm not dragging tomorrow. Have a great week all.

Pam

New Year

It is a New Year well the 15th day of that New Year. New Year means new beginnings and though I have not posted in awhile I know that I need to do this everyday for my benefit. I started doing Weight Watchers with a lady at work. I had all the tools they give you from when I use to go about 3 years ago. She goes to the meetings and shares the information she receives. We encourage each other and make sure we continue with our goals. I have lost 15 lbs since starting in November. I'm so proud of myself and know that I have the willpower to succeed. So with a new year comes new goals. Here are my short term goals for the rest of the month:

1) Start walking on my breaks at work (I have my tennis shoes there, just need to lace them up and start walking).
2) Continue to stay within my POINTS Target for each day and not use too many of my flex points
3) Plan all snacks and portion size them in containers for an easy grab on my way out the door.

A long term goal is:

Lose an additional 30 lbs by June 17th. My husband and I are taking our daughter to Disneyland for her 6th Birthday and I would like to have some major weight loss to enjoy the day with her. I know with the eating more healthy and exercising I will have more energy for our trip. ;)

New habits I need to start:

1) Type in this diary daily
2) Write down everything I eat in my eating journal
3) Exercise (this is such a hard thing to start)

So if you are reading this dairy know that there are going to be my up days as well as my down days. I will share my joys and struggles. This is for me, but if I can be an encouragement to anyone than lets encourage each other.

I'm excited about continuing on this weight loss journey.

A new week

Today is Sunday January 22, 2006. I feel like I have had such a great week last week. I wrote down everything I ate in my journal and kept within my points. I was able to go for a walk once last week. It is a start since excerising is such a hard thing for me to start doing. I can always come up with a million excuses to not excerise. Now I have to start the new routine of typing in this diary everyday to help keep me focused more. So what was accomplished this past week? Well I lost additional 1.5 lbs. I have to admit I was surprised by that amount. I felt sure that I had gained or not lost anything at all. I have been making sure that I drink my water. I have a 32 oz cup from Weight Watchers that I got when I was attending the meetings. I have two of those at work each day and I find myself drinking water for meals instead of juice or soda. I'm more conscious of what I'm putting in my mouth and now ask myself if I really want to eat that or am I just bored.

I had decided around Thanksgiving to give up drinking soda. It was a lot easier than I thought. I will have one every now and again but not everyday. For awhile there I would have two or three Diet Cokes a day. Now I will have two or three a month. I don't miss it and I do feel lots better.

Ok goals for this week:

1) Continue to write everything down
2) Walk at work (set up a reminder in my Outlook calendar to go for a walk)
3) Type in the diary every day

Go me!!!!:D :D :D :D

Another week has gone

Another week has gone and I have to say I have done well. I have walked four of the five days during my morning break at work. I have been writing down what I eat and making sure I stay within my points total for the day. Yesterday I realized I didn't eat all my points and was hungry right after dinner. I didn't eat or snack on anything cause it was 10:00 pm and I didn't want to have something sitting in my stomach when I went to bed. Today is a new day. I'm going to spend it playing with ink and paper with some friends and just enjoy myself. My husband is having Daddy/Daughter day with our daughter so they can spend time together since he has worked late most days this past week.

I need to go grocery shopping and make sure we have more fresh fruits and veggies in the house. I now am looking at reducing the amount of processed foods we eat.

Goals for the weekend:

1) Make sure I eat all my Points for the day
2) Continue to write down what I eat
3) Go for a walk

I feel so successful this time around and more motivated. It definitely helps to have the support of co-workers and my husband.

I know I can do this.
