Pain!!!! with cycling bike.

It’s a long read but I would really appreciate it if someone could read and help.

Right, about me, I’m 19, 5'10, and 236.6, so obviously very overweight, i had a mental condition for awhile which basically left me in bed for a year and then just in my room for a further 2 years with no or very little exercise.

Now I’m better, and I’m trying to get my body healthy and in shape, long run i know, but worth it.

I started using a treadmill and lifting some weights for awhile and I was getting better at jogging etc, and I thought they were working well, so I got my old bike out and tried to go on a little ride, and nearly killed myself. So I borrowed my sister’s old exercise bike to get me started as i obviously need more muscles in my thighs, i was only able to get up a small hill on my actual bike....

So now I’m using this exercise bike, here is my question, I pedal as fast as I can or slow it doesn’t matter, either way after a short period my thighs hurt so much I can’t even move them, so i have to stop and the pain gets even worse for a few seconds then it goes. I can do this for about 15 minutes before the pain is just too much to continue.

Is this normal? Does everyone feel that pain, should i just suck up and endure it?

If it is normal are there some starting exercises I should do before using the bike to get my thighs to a point where I can stay on the bike without AS much pain.

Your muscles are being worked - that is a good thing. Stay with it and you'll be able to go farther and faster.

How long 'till you get the pains? keep a diary, see if your improving or getting worse.

Don't do the same exercise every day, change to walking or swimming...try different forms of exercise to get a good overall fitness whilst having the other muscles some time to repair. Its the resting time that makes muscles stronger as they repair and reapir to be stonger, not the working of them so rest is very important here.

If you have been bedbound for a number of years, its going to take a while to become strong enough to get to where you want to be, remember that just because you can see others do x,y and z doesn't mean you should be there yet, you will need to take things in baby steps.

Do you stretch after working out? this is very important as when you exercise your muscles become shorter. You stretch so you can help the recovery process and reduce if not prevent muscle soreness. Make sure your not only stretching but also holding each pose correctly as its very easy to pick up bad habits and stretch in a way which makes the stretch pointless. Things like making sure knees and thighs are touching/together and pointing downwards when doing a quad stretch and also holding for enough time (40 seconds would be good) will all make that bit more difference.

Added to that is warming up and cooling down- get the circulation going by some basic walking and moving around 'till you feel your ready to take on a full workout. When your done reduce your speed- don't just suddenly stop. You need to reduce the circulation rather then just stopping.

I had this problem. Similar situation but I was just lazy. My legs KILLED after a bike ride and I talked to some bike riders and they mentioned to make sure my leg was slightly bent when pedal to the ground. I actually ended up getting a new bike because my seat post was too high and handle bars too low.

To sum it up, I got a bike fitted to me and it made a HUGE difference. Muscles soar, but no pain, especially around the knee area.
