Hi,
I havent really put thought into my eating other than the obvious of what I shouldnt be eating. I would love to eat healthy meals, but, I get overwhelmed by what you should have at everymeal and how much of it. I feel overwhelmed when at the grocery store I just dont know what to buy.

Are the any basic things that are a must have in the fridge/cupboard to get me started, I expect it to become a habit once I know what im doing.

Any help would be appreciated,
Thanks,
Katie

Think "1 ingredient foods." Foods that are only 1 thing - an apple, nuts, carrots, etc.

Hi Katie. I know how easy it is to get overwhelmed with all the possible options - and all the information out there.

I find it easier, rather than thinking about specific foods, to think about food in terms of type. For example: protein, veg, carb, fruit, fat.

For every meal and snack I try to include some form of protein and some form of veg or fruit. Then I fill in with complex carbs and fats (remembering that some foods count for more than one thing).

So for example my food might be:

Breakfast: yogurt and blueberries (protein, fruit)
Snack: apple and cheese (fruit, protein)
Lunch: spinach salad with grilled chicken, w/ an olive oil vinegar dressing (veggies, protein, fat)
Snack: carrot sticks and hummus (veggies, protein & fat)
Snack: peanut butter on a slice of whole grain bread (protein & fat, carbs)
Dinner: grilled salmon, grilled mixed veggies, brown rice (protein, veggies, carbs)

It's easier to shop if you plan your meals out in advance. I plan mine a week in advance and then make a shopping list based on that. As you do this more, you'll find that you buy a lot of the same things each week and it isn't as difficult because you have more of a handle on what you will eat. Like you said, it'll become a habit.

For me, every week I buy blueberries, broccoli, chicken breasts, zucchini, milk (to make yogurt), cheese, apples, carrots & celery, dried beans of some kind, onions ... etc.

I have a simple question.
I just ate breakfast,
1 slice of whole wheat bread with 1 fried egg (in light spray oil)
1 glass of water
I also have a bowl of fruit,
1/2 necturine, 1/2 plum and 10 grapes

now im full after eating the egg on toast with my water, should i still eat the fruit? or leave it for a snack?
i know im suppose to stop when i feel full but i also know i should have fruit or veg with every meal.

I also have a glass of soy milk,

thanks for all your input.

If you're full, then stop. You don't HAVE to have a fruit with every meal as long as you make sure to get the fruit/veg in at some point.

When I say I have protein and fruit/veg at every meal, it's because it's easier for me to prioritize my food or I wind up not getting enough something.

For example, in terms of your breakfast, I would have had the egg and the fruit FIRST and then had the toast if I was still hungry - because for me, my priorities are fruit/veg and protein.

aha, gotcha. :)
