Overnight Weight Loss? How the heck..

Ok, let's be real folks. I've been seeing an unusual trend these past couple of days. I weight myself everyday, and first off - I already know my weight fluctuates (as does everyone else).

But, for instance, when I weighed myself last night, I was 190 lbs on the scale (used another to verify - Both very reliable). Then, I weighed myself 8 hours later (during morning time), and noticed I was 186.5. That's a pretty steep drop.

I'm confused as to how these large drops of weight occur during night time while I'm sleeping.

I mean, realistically speaking here, how can I be losing this weight without um, actually going to the bathroom so to speak, lol. Is 3.5 lbs of water evaporating overnight? Whats going on.

It's just freaky! Any comments appreciated!

When you sleep, your body is expending energy without intaking any.

Food + O2 ---> CO2 + H2O(g) +energy

Since both sides of the equation must have equal mass in a closed system, the food you've consumed throughout the day (which may add up to several pounds) is drastically reduced in weight due to the constant expulsion of water vapor and CO2.

Additionally, you lose a percentage of water intake during sleep in the form of sweat. Water weighs about 8.3 lbs/gallon. So losing as little as 1/8th gallon of water overnight through evaporation and sweating can result in a loss of 1 pound.

3 pounds of overnight weight fluctuation is very normal.

It came as a surprise to me too. Probably more so because I'd never been near a set of scales for years.

I always weigh 2 to 3 pounds less in the morning than the night before. Seems if it's a hot night I lose the most. What I've eaten makes a difference too. If I eat rice I can weigh a lot more soon afterwards but it's always gone again by morning. I assume this is because rice holds a lot of water rather than is putting on fat.

Was surprised how inaccurate electronic scales can be even when a good make. I found just the way I step onto them can make up to a pound difference.

I can have a 3 lb fluctuation within an hour in the moring. I can wake up at 177, go excersise, go to the bathroom, drink some water, come back and weigh 174. I weigh myself almost every day too, but I will always weigh myself under the same conditions. Always when I've excersised, gone to the bathroom, and had my water. I only see loss that way, not fluctuations.

Not everybody is a professional, so what may seem obvious to you may seem weird to someone else. Plus, who says everybody has to know everything about weight loss and what goes with it? We learn as we go.

I suppose you have a point, but I am not a professional and I know that information. I guess it makes sense to me and therefore just knew that. I might be taking things for granted like common sense and what not.

Here's the thing.

I was simply stating the fact that I am surprised, is all.

What 'not everyone being a professional' and 'everyone not knowing everything' has anything to do with my surprise.... I am not sure.

I am certainly aware of not everyone being a professional. Hell, most people who aren't professionals are more educated than the so-called professionals.

I am also well aware of the fact that not everyone knows everything about weight loss. Hell, I don't know anyone who knows everything about anything.

So, one of these might help. :chillpill:

What's funny in this community is the moment I bring up a personal observation or emotion of my own, such as said surprise, I get jumped on. But others do this day in and day out around here and it's left without any conflict.

It's as if I'm only aloud to hand information and fact in a package that's pleasing to all or I get pissed on.

I suppose this is one of the main reasons I don't like this place as much as I used to and why I won't be around as much sooner than later.

Fuck that... most reasonable and rational people knew what you meant. Some people who want to "show" you up will jump over anything you say. Don't let lamers do that shit to you. You're presence here is for the better of the boards... not by someone trying to inflate their ego by a hit and run post.

this is the exact reason why some people who don't get enough sleep at night get so frustrated dieting and not loosing enough. Its been asked in few threads around these forums. Getting enough sleep should be as important as having a breakfast every morning. If you can't manage it then you need to change your life style or something, because sleeping 6 hours a day or less is unhealthy.

Steve - I do hope that you do not avoid this forum. It certainly benefits from your observations. You have written many things that I have seen later and have helped me - but I did not thank you because it was a long time after you had written it.

Thanks Omega. In all honesty, I'm not looking for thanks. I'm sure there are some here who think I'm out to have my ego stroked..... but that's not it either. I'm here b/c I genuinly like discussing the topic at hand. That said though, I'm not a robot spitting out information in pretty packages 100% of the time. I'm not paid to be a 'professional' on this forum. I'm just a regular member like anyone else around here. I'd just like it if I wasn't jumped on every damn time I speak my mind opposed to fact.

I mean geez, it's gotten to the point where people complain how I present my informative posts even though they really appreciate the information.

Wait, your not?! News flash to me. :biggrinjester:

For the most part, this community is great, better than any other online forums I've ever been a part of (several, including my own and Howard Forums). Don't let people with nothing to offer bring you down. As a matter of fact, I am kind of shocked that you would let some of those people get to you. You usually have that attitude that people can take or leave what you say... but I guess eventually it does become aggravating to put time in effort into something to only be shat upon.

You have a forum?

I love it here too. If I didn't, I wouldn't average 15 posts per day, lol. I just don't love it as much as I used to when I first joined.

I did, but its about gadgets and geeky stuff, like cell phones.

I don't even post there anymore. I let other people run it now. I couldn't even tell you what was going on with it, could be a front for the mafia at this point. :)

that happens sometimes, it depends on what you ate the day before, or what you drank. if u drank a lot of water and then weighed yr self, and then next day u went to the bathroom, then weighed yrself, it's gonna be a significant change. Anyways, don't complain about weight loss! lol

to Steve

First of all, I'm not "jumping on you". I just said that I don't think there's anything surprising in someone who doesn't know about overnight weight-loss. Maybe my way of saying that wasn't the best, but I'm not an English speaker. I do what I can to be polite but it's difficult in a language that's not your own.
Second, I never said or thought you're only allowed to give informations and if you got a different opinion on something else you should keep it for yourself. That's something you assumed from my post. And I really didn't write those things because it's you but because it was what I thought. I've been here only for a month so to me you're a member of the forum like everybody else.

I guess I am the one who's surprised right now. I didn't expect all this fuss about my post, especially from someone who's so sensitive about other people jumping on him if he expresses a different opinion.
Plus, I found some of yours and Darth Pooh posts pretty rude, considering that in my post I didn't call you any names (like "someone trying to inflate their ego by a hit and run post."),said anything offensive about you or used sarcasm ("So, one of these might help. :chillpill:").

Didn't realize you were a non English speaking user and that really doesn't change the fact that your post came out as a direct challenge to what Steve had said. Now I am not his mommy and won't defend him nor his actions, but I thought your post had nothing good to really add except call Steve out on a post.

And to boot, that post wasn't only directed at you (the ego bit). I actually didn't really mean it about you at all, but other posters in the past few weeks who have been having hit and run posts. Secondly, I don't really care how I came off to you... I won't lose sleep over that, and neither should you. I am here to do one thing, get information and give it when I can. If I can't, I won't... The only reason I responded to your post and Steve's reaction is SIMPLE: He is more useful to me than you. If you are the reason he is chased away (not the sole reason, but on of the breaking points), I'm not so happy about that.
