Oprah show today

she had some doctor on her show today. he talked about how its more important to work on waistline rather than weight in general because of health issues. he said women's waists should be under 32.5 inches and men under 35 inches. this is because of the organ called "omentum" which if it gets full of fat, can cause health issues. he also said just drop 100 calories a day and walk about 10,000 steps, and try to keep out bad foods and then in 2 weeks you can see a difference and supposedly you can keep doing this for life, easily.

They showed a healthy omentum which you can see through, and unhealthy one you cannot. and they showed a healthy liver as being darker. a whiter one is unhealthy due to the fat.

They also showed a lady that had gained 30 lbs from eating a lot, she was 37 inches and 3 weeks later, when she came on the show, she was 28 inches.

I dont know what to think about this episode. They said this wasnt gonna be a diet. but the food part still says to not eat bad foods, which to me IS a diet! and thats the hardest part. so i dont see how this is an easier solution. what do you guys think?

Everything revolves back to the golden word nutrition doesn't it really.

I don't see it as dieting. I'm cutting now, and I see myself as looking to implement correct and accurate nutrition, not dieting to lose some fat.

Guess it depends what your goals are.

Anything involving watching what you eat is a diet. And since you can't spot reduce, and the waistline is one of the hardest parts to keep slim, obviously if you dieted enough to have a slim waist you would be lean in general.

yeah i dont know. he guaranteed that you would drop dress sizes if you did this for 2 weeks or whatever and then you last like that forever. i dont plan on following what he said, was just curious. thanks.

My understanding is that the omentum is not an organ, but connective tissue, that is a collection of ligaments that hold the organs in the midsection in place...

A diet by any other name is a diet? Or perhaps they would prefer to call it a lifestyle change?

I caught that episode as well and I agree that the goal is for a change of lifestyle. The doctors on the show are the authors of "You: The Owner's Manual" and were there to promote their new book.

The ladies on the show admitted to knowing nothing about nutrition and did little to no exercise (one lady had just over 50% body fat!). So, it's to be expected that people who fit this description are going to notice significant benefits from these small changes.

Fact is that there are a lot of people out there who are clueless or are in denial when it comes to their health, so I think they were trying to get them to at least start thinking about it. A lot of people will tune out at the sound of the word "treadmill", but will pay attention at the sight of a giant omentum and even get motivated to hear that all they need to do is walk a little and eat a bit better to at least start turning things around. (it sells books too) :)

I think that's what it is as well. It can't be that necessary though because I know that it typically gets removed in certain types of surguries (i.e. ovarian cancer treatment).
