Sport One potato, two potato...

Potatoes. I searched this board and couldn't find any threads on them, so I was wondering if anyone could give me the 411 on them?

I love baked potatoes and I've heard mixed thoughts on whether or not they are good for you. I eat mine baked, with 2Tbsp. salsa, 1Tbsp. Guacamole, and 1/2 C. low fat cottage cheese.

Is this a good choice, or no? If so, how (in)frequently should I be eating them? Thanks!

White potatoes have a very high glycemic index, so they are generally put on the list of less desirable or starchy carbs. If they are eaten with other foods the combination tends to have a lower glycemic index, so if you combine them with a lean protien source (like cottage cheese) they become less "bad". Of course compared to white bread, white rice or any other refined or sugary carb they are infinitely better. If you are trying to minimize body fat, you might want to limit your high glycemic index or starchy carbs to one serving per day.

waht are your goals?

if you're bulking, potatoes are fine
if you're maintaining, just watch your carb intake
if you're cutting, you're gonna really need to limit potatoes, and other starchy carbs in general.

so if you combine them with a lean protien source (like cottage cheese).

Cottage cheese is a lean protein source?? I usually eat full fat cottage cheese, and i don't consider it very lean.

Malkore said exactly what i was going to say about potatoes. I'd stick to baked idaho/redskin potatoes.

I have low-fat cottage cheese in the fridge and it says it contains 2% of your total fat and 3% of your sat fat for the entire day!! I'd say thats pretty low.
