olympic weights/lifting

hey buddies.
for those who bought their own equipment, can anyone recommend a good place to buy an olympic weight set with a bar? what is a good price range?

i am very interested in oly lifting now. i know karky knows about oly lifts :D so could anyone jump in and offer me a website where i can learn all there is about oly lifts and how to put together routines, how to train, what the lifts train ect ect?

I'm sure Evo and Georgen would be of more help than me. I don't know where to buy something. But check out the sticky evo made about oly lifting tutorial in the weight training section.

there are some programs there. I followed the intermid once a long time ago, gave me good gains, not only in my oly lifts but also my squat (the first time I squatted 100kg was on that program)

Do you want an olympic lifting barbell set or do you want a 45lb bar and bumper plates?

Here are the bumper plates from ebay

If you have a sporting goods store next to you, you might be able to purchase from them.

Realize though that without a coach to watch you, it will be extremely hard, if not impossible, to get perfect/great technique.

i need an olympic bar AND the weights. i am pretty poor so i cant just go out and buy the full price one :/
i will record myself doing it and hopefully my form wont be that bad. i will post them here for critique.

thanks for the links guys. but i dont know some of the exercises like
whats a snatch balance?
whats a back raise?
a "romanian pull" is a RDL, right?

since i havent ever power cleaned, or snatched, i am going to do a self teaching progression course consisting of easing into the exercises like
Progression A
Front Squat
Progression B
Shrug
Hang Jump Shrug
Jump Shrug (clean pull)
Progression C
Hang Pull
Romanian Deadlift
High Pull
Progression D
Hang Clean
Clean
Progression E
Push Press
Split Jerk
Clean and Jerk

sound good?

how long time would you spend on each? I really think you only need to do something like:
Hang low pull
Hang high pull
Hang power clean/snatch
Then start doing full hang cleans/snatches (if you can), eventually also learning to pull it from the floor doing power cleans and full cleans from the floor

I suppose you have front squatted before? If not, you have to learn that too ofcource.

Im not sure how to progress to doing the jerk, I guess just practice :p

i have front squatted before but since i will just be getting into lifting agian(had to take 4 months off since back injury), i am going to practice deadlifting and front squatting as well as OH squatting before i do anything more difficult.

hang low pull? what?

yea i think practice with lower weight will really be the way to get better.
im going to have to make my own routines until i am very comfortable doing all the ol lifts

:D thanks karks

The above links have a bunch of weightlifting clubs in Florida. Best Advice. Don't bother buying the weights. Unless you are spending a grand or more you are going to have a bent bar within a year and wil be buying another one. These are USAW teams, they will have coaches.

Go to a club, get coached.

this explaines some different pulls, high pull among them:
TESTOSTERONE NATION - Pulling Your Chain For Massive Gains!

try them with both clean and snatch grip. and when you start learning you usually strat from the hang, once you master the hang power clean and hang power snatch you start working on pulling from the floor (the "first pull" from the floor to the knees is by many considered the hardest part of the lift, technically)

I'm with G...find one of the clubs near you, and get a coach. I'm having to spend a great deal of time working on my 2nd phase of the pull due to getting bad mechanics from doing the Olympic lifts on my own.

Even if you can only get to a coach a couple times a month, it's better than nothing.

If you want a simple 45lb bar and plates to work out at home, look for a Play It Again Sports or an Academy where you can get a 300lb set for under $120. Granted I think those bars only are made to hold 500lbs worth of weight. But they might last you a year and you can invest in a better bar for a few hundred.

That being said, it's hard to find your power positions unless they're shown to you. Hitting the power position is huge in getting proper explosion.

It wasn't until I had a real coach that I can actually spend a decent amount of time with did I realize how important a coach is.

thanks for the info evo.
i have a coach at school who can hopefully take me into the weight room during PE and teach me personally. shes awesome.

your advice will be heeded.

I would certainly go there if it were near me. I just bought JC's Band and Pulley dvds.

windows movie maker is really basic. i just discovered it a week ago and it took me not even a day to figure out most of its features.

you basically have to capture the videos you want(by downloading), import to WMM, arrange, add wanted effects/music, then just create the movie on your PC to upload to youtube.
