Sport Olives

I love olives. I think they're great. As far as I can tell, they're great for me too. I like jalapeno stuffed ones especially. Is there anything wrong with them?

I just don’t trust them, they look all green and wholesome but they have those big ol’ pips in them that they were planning on choking me with!

IMO they should all be squashed into a pulp and their juices thrown into a heated pan

I feel like that sometimes. I figured that they might have too much sodium or acid in them or something.

I usually have them with chicken and cheese.

Olives are fine, its what they are in (eg sunflower oil- or even olive oil!) and what you have stuffed in them or with them that matters.

They can end up being very high in fat so keep aware of that. Anything too high in fat is bad for you.

I get them stuffed with jalapenos mostly. Never thought to look at the liquid they're in. Thanks.

Er, Olive Oil is not bad for you, why would you think it is?

Olive oil can be bad for you if you have too much. You only need so much fat a day, also heated it is bad for you, as saturated fats and trans fats develop. Its very easy to over do your daily requirement of far if your having many olives for example.

Anything in moderation is fine, too much of anything is bad you only need a little fat and most of it for many people is within the other foods they eat within the day.

Who told you olive oil was not bad for you?

Oil as a whole is not bad, neither is fat, try reading the works of people like Dr John Berardi who says that 25-30% of your calorie intake should be from fats and a third of those calories from monounsaturates like olive oil.
You would need to eat a huge amount of olives to consume that much oil

What is the juice they're suspended in usually? I was looking at a jar today as I bought another one, lol and it just seems to be water.

If you're buying them in a jar they're usually kept in brine, it's good for preserving things but doesn't do much for the taste

Deli counters will sell olives in oil, and good food stores will usually sell them in pots rather than sealed jars. The shelf life is reduced but the product is nicer which is why they cost a lot more like that.

I'm not sure how common olives are in the US so you might only be able to get them in jars in some places. Go to somewhere like Spain though and they literally give them away, often if you buy a beer in a bar they hand you a plate of fresh olives to go with it. In the UK though, olives in a bar often cost more than the beer!

So true!!

I have to say I have never seen them in brine before- I don't buy olives (my mum, sister and my neice do and really seem to adore them, obviously I missed on that gene!), they always eat them in olive oil- and many at a sitting!

Interesting. I really need to investigate this. For how much I like them, I really should try them other ways. In olive oil sounds pretty awesome.

everything should be taken in moderation :)
