Sport old fashion vs. quick oatmal

Sport Fitness
I just noticed at the store that there were two types of oatmeal, Quick Oats and Old Fashioned...they seemed exactly the same. What is the diff?

And is the calories that they list since it says dry the same if you make it with water and do not add anything?

Thanks!

Water has 0 Calories, at least my tap does  so adding water to it shouldn't change anything. Cooking it may vary the nutrition, not by much tho but I think that is factored in already on the nutrition facts. It should say whether it is cooked or not I think.

Derwyd is right: quick cooking oatmeal has been slightly processed, and has a higher glycemic index....more insulin response.

plus quick oats cook up into paste, while old fashion or steel cut oats are a little nicer consistency.

so that's two good reasons to stick to old fashioned.

do you cook it the same? Can I just add water and put in the microwave?

Also what about like those oatmeal in packets? I bought some of the weight control one that has more fiber and protein. Those good?

I think the processing in this case is steaming and then rolling them flat. If you want to take a step closer to the groat, you can buy steel cut oats. There, the only processing is taking the groats and cutting them up into 3, maybe 4 pieces. I have Bob's Red Mill Organic Steel Cut Oats a lot and enjoy them with raisins, a glass of milk, a glass of orange juice and a banana.

I can't stand instant, it's mushy paste. Old fashioned has a much better conisitency, especially if made with more oats and less water than called for, that way, they get cooked, but not mushy.

I love mush. That's why I eat oat bran with wheat bran :)

same. when i bulk i add a little natty PB (post cooking) which really lubricates the oats, and adds a lot of flavor.

I eat the same kind of steel cut oats when i can, but damn that stuff just gets expensive

Yup - sometimes it seems like a package will last forever, and others, it seems like I just got one and have to get another again. Though I have to say I really like their hot oat cereal too. The multigrain stuff I'm not too sure about yet.
