ok this maybe stupid but how much does

bike in the gym really do other than hurt your butt?
the seat is death in the form of like synthetic materials

but isnt running so much better? like what does biking do exactly?

It's all based on where you want your HR and what machine you prefer to get you there.

if you're using it for a warm up, bike's ok as you don't have to endure it too long. it's also handy if you've eaten fairly close to a work out compared to running (i have to leave a gap of 3 hours after eating before i go for a run whereas i can get away with 2 hours if i'm going cycling). if you're using it to lose calories, go for running, cross training or rowing. better still, buy yourself a bicycle and get outside with it; much more fun - cycle to the gym, why not.

I think stationary bicycles are a suitable substitute for a real bike in that they work the same muscles and improve cardio. But, if all you are doing is riding the stationary bike, it will be very difficult to look buff and slim with that alone.
