Well, I love being a kiwi and am proud of where I come from but this is the first time I am ashamed of my country.....
They have lived there for 6 years but due to obesity and a knee issue they are not getting new visas or getting deported!

I expected to see the photo of someone that I would consider to be big... The amazing thing is that he isnt that big at all!!! Checking the article - he has lost 30kg (66 pounds) and would like to lose another 30kg... He is a success story - worthy of praise for his achievements...

Exactly,
Plus the fact he's been accepted every year before this one. 6 years they have built their life there, paid their taxes etc,
He's lost weight and got his blood pressure under control.
Wonder if the media will help get them to stay.

I was so shocked when I read this article.

How long before you will see people get deported because they smoke or do too much sport... Those are both factors that cause expenditure on medical treatment... People do get sports injuries...

I somehow think that the powers that be think it is easier to pick on someone that is 66 pounds overweight as they are easier to spot in the street and get some trolling public support for the measures...

Lets face it - we all remember how the schoolyard bullies could get away with picking on the chunky kid...

So true,
I can understand monitoring immigration and controlling it but deportation after 6 years of being perfectly good citizens.

This one has really got my knickers in a twist!

To be honest, the only thing wrong I see with this is that they accepted him when he was heavier, and never mentioned anything about his weight until now, AFTER he lost 30 kg. That's just messed up. If they had refused entry to start with, I would have understood that - if it says that you have to be in good health and whatnot to get the visa, and you're overweight, then, as bad as it is, that's a good enough reason to refuse them.

But to let him in, let him work, and then after 6 years and quite a considerable weight loss to go around and say 'Hey, you're not healthy enough', and force him to leave a good job, that's just plain wrong. I have to say, I'm glad to see that bureaucracy is as bad everywhere as it is over here. I thought we were the only ones where crazy stuff like that happens!

I totally agree with you. I could also understand if he was refused from word go but as you said after 6 years and a weight loss. It's just so wrong.

Wow, this is sad. Not sure what else to say...so sick of people being discriminated against because of their weight....its a horrible feeling =/
