Sport Nutrition help.

Sport Fitness
Hi everyone, this is my first post in the nutrition section. Over the past year I’ve lost about 50 lbs from about 190 to 140 on a 5’7” frame. I’m proud of my accomplishment made possible with lots of running and complete lifestyle change. I went from eating junk food everyday to salads and diet, caffeine free Pepsi lol.

Recently I’ve decided that I want to actually get “fit,” what I mean is that even though I’ve lost a lot of weight I’ve never felt as if I’ve had the strength to go with it. Therefore I’ve started to go to the gym and lift weights and use the machines but I realize that “bulking up” and staying thin cannot be done at the same time. I’ve read a lot of posts that suggest in order to gain muscle one has to consume a lot of calories. Over the past year I believe that a major factor in my weight loss has been the control of the amount of calories I’ve consumed and watching my intake of carbs and fats. I’m afraid that by dramatically increasing my calorie intake I will gain more weight and not muscle. I’d like to know how I can achieve a reasonable balance between the two and what other types of food I should add or take out to make a healthier diet. Below is my current diet (although it does vary often):

Breakfast: Cereal (Special K, Kellogg), non-fat milk, and 1 cup orange juice.
Lunch: Caesar salad (no dressing), 1 can of Diet non-caffeine Pepsi
Dinner: Depends, but mostly red and white meat and sometimes more Caesar salad.
I usually do not eat snacks in between meals
I sometimes eat out at Subways, foot long Roast Beef mmm yumm

I also try to eat three meals a day at 6:30 am, 1 pm, and 7 pm.
Recently I’ve tried to incorporate healthy snacks between meals (ie crackers and fruits) and trying to eliminate all the carbonated drinks to just water.

ohhh.... i would say your eating too little. There are big spaces between your meals. You should try to eat something every 2-3 hrs and try 4-5 meals a day but portions. you dont neccesarly have to eat alot of calories to get "fit" or whatnot. Just eat enough and make sure you consume enough protien. Are you trying to get buff or lean?

I'm trying to seek a balance between being "buff" and lean. I want to simply gain more muscle without gaining to much mass.

Didn't you already post this a couple weeks ago?? :D

I agree with Toly about eating more often, don't you get hungry for those 7 hours between meals? Even if you don't, you have to be feeding your body often to gain anything that even resembles muscle. Also, and equally important, have some form of protein with your meals and snacks. One meal a day with protein is not sufficient.

my situation is more the oppesite of buzz here i wiegh like 230 and my goal is to lose wieght, tone, and strengthen my body i figure i do this through lightwieght workuots, walking, running, and while balenced nutritional meals but i would like see as much feedback
as i can....ty peace

p.s. what kind of supplements would anyone refer for someone like me

if ur trying to bulk up, its a good goal to gain roughly 7 to 8 pounds a month.... if ur eating a clean diet, and have a good workout program, the majority of those pounds would be lean mass. I try to gain 2 pounds a week while bulking, of course your gonna put on some fat, but its easier to take off fat, than it is to build muscle. And u dont really have to dramatically increase ur calorie intake , just count how many calories u eat in a normal day, and add about 300 more calories to it. 6 small meals a day, to keep the metabolism up. as far as other types of food, I like to stick with.... fish steaks, chicken, peanut butter, protein bars/shakes, tuna! TUNA TUNA!, fruits, vegetables, eggs/egg whites / oatmeal, lean meats, turkey\ham. hamburgers without the buns! , hope i touched on some of ur questions
