I don't seem to be losing weight at all and am beginning to think that i'm not eating enough. I try to eat 1000 calories maximum but often eat about 800 calories. Does this mean my body is in starvation mode? How do i stop this?

Boy, i'm not sure what to tell ya. I don't count calories so I don't know what is good or bad. I do know that yeah your body can go into starvation mode. Aren't you suppose to have 2000 calories a day? If so then 800 doesn't seem like much. I'm really not the one to ask though. I do know that you don't want to starve yourself. Keep asking people until you get a good answer, I guess.

What I would do is make sure you are eating "healthy" foods and eat them often.... like five or six times a day but eat small amounts. You can gain weight even on healthy foods so make sure it's small amounts(use your better judgement.) You also MUST make sure you get all your food groups in there though. I found that out the hard way..lol. Eat well rounded healthy small meals and it should start to pick up. It could take your body a bit. I'll go weeks without losing at times but then all of a sudden i'll drop five pounds. You just have to stick with it and in time it will pay off. Good luck

You need to get a good idea on what your basal metabolic rate is (BMR) This is what your body burns in calories for everyday body functions such as breathing, sleeping, sitting..etc,etc. You can find it by Googling BMR Calculator. 800 is definetly below where you want to be....

Your body is an amazing machine. If it isn't getting enough food, it will slow down the metabolism and store as much fat as it can. It thinks that you are not going to get to eat and it wants to preserve all the calories it can for surviving.

The best thing to do is find out what your daily needs are and then break that number of calories into 5-6 meals. This keeps the metabolism burning at high speeds.

And you'll hear a lot of people tell you these two things:

Drink a lot of water and never skip breakfast!!

800 calories is way to low no matter what your stats are. I'm sure you are burning the living hell out of your lean muscle tissue with that intake.

List what you eat and the exact time you eat it throughout the day.

You seem to know what you're talking about, so would you mind if I asked you a question along the same lines?

I work out 5 days a week, min. hour and a half. i either do an hour's cardio class (interval training) + 20 min stepper machine + 30 min run/walk OR I'll do 2-3 miles running/walking + 30 minutes rowing machine + 30 minutes stepper. each of those days i also do about 10 min of abs/lunges/free weights.

I am recovering from anorexia and am terrified of gaining weight, thus the exercise. On the other hand, it feels like I can't tone up no matter what I do, so I still hate how my body looks. I am currently 21 years old, 5'4" 105-110 (not sure exactly). I haven't had a period since October. I eat between 800 and 1200 calories a day, averaging a 1000.

I eat my first meal between noon and 1 pm - veggie burger patty with lettuce, tomato, onion, dab of ketchup, one bowl lettuce with small scoop tuna salad, sometimes a broth or broccoli as well. usually drink water/soda/coffee/tea.

second meal is dinner at 6 - i eat the same thing i ate for lunch, sometimes plus an orange.

then at night, between 10-11, i eat a low cat 60 cal yogurt, a protein bar (180-300 cal depending on the brand), 1/2 cup oatmeal, an orange or apple (sometimes both).

How much more and what should I eat / reduce exercise?

Thanks for any help!

Are you a vegetarian??

Good For you for facing your Anorexia and trying to make your body healthier. Are you under the care of a doctor and trainers right now, because if so, it's better to get these questions asked directly from those who are more intimate with your situation.

I am no doctor or trainer, but based on interaction with trainers and from information I have learned along the way, It seems to me that you are working out too much. I wouldn't go over an hour and 15 minutes of concentrated exercise per day. You could be (are probably) overworking your body.

Additionally, If you don't like the way you are looking, you should add more strength training to sculpt muscles to make your body firmer.

It also seems that based on your workout regimen plus what you have listed as your caloric intake you may not be eating enough. But, as you are in a delicate situation, if you add more food and gain weight, you may spiral back into the wrong direction.

Good Luck with whatever you decide to do, but adding more fresh fruits, veggies, good fats and protein would be my advice.. and don't forget the multivitamins.
