Not a good idea to increase 2.5 lbs. resistance on one end only?

Hi all.

The smallest free weight I can find is 2.5 lbs., that means to even out my barbell/dumbells I have to add 2.5 on each side, which would be 5 lbs. altogether.

I want to increase resistance 2.5 lbs. per week instead of 5 lbs. per 2 weeks.

Is it better to just stick to 5 lbs. per 2 weeks, or is it ok to put 2.5 lbs. on only one side of my bars?

I wouldn't put 2.5 on one side, it will make the lift more unstable.
Sure, you might say that's a good thing, but not always, and regardless, it would probably be considered an advanced technique. You could try to increase reps the first week, then add 5lbs the second week.

I agree with Karky. Having one side heavier is not a good idea.

Do you work out at the gym or do you use weights at home? Either way, there are weights at there (for any size bar) that are 1.25 lbs.

Do a quick search of places in your area that may sell these.
