No sports drink delima

ok... in my last 1/2 marathon they advertised sports drink at the water stops then only had it at the 10 mile mark..and I was not happy about it... I was really looking for it at the 7 mile water stop!

so I asked for the 15k I am running... they are not having sports drink... just water... so I am figuring 1:17 as my finish time... so I am figuring right around the 50 minute mark I am going to want some sports drink...

So I have some choices...

carry some with me...
GU
Shot blocks
sport beans

ok... I'll go without before I carry it with me

so it looks like I am left with... either trying gu or shot blocks... sport beens.. or going with out....

Thoughts?

My inclination is to go with shot blocks... and pop one or two at the water stop...

OR... I could try to get someobody I know to stand on the corner at the 5 mile mark and hand me a bottle of sports drink... ? But not sure I could count on them being aloud to do that... or that I could get someone willing to do it.. .

I guess I should just learn to use gu or shot blocks... because I am sure this will happen again...

I'm not sure how useful shot blocks would be during such a short event. Personally I would take a couple GUs and have one at say 40 minutes (saving the other in case you lose one.) This would digest quicker than a shot block. Wash it down with water.

Or, don't even worry about GU and simply bring a water bottle with a HIGH QUALITY sports drink from someone like and sip every 15-20 minutes

Another bit of advice. Gulp down a water bottle of sports drink (Again, consider something from ) about one hour before the event to top of glycogen stores.

Regardless of what you take, make sure to try it BEFORE your event so you know how your body will react.

ok... i got some sport beens... and tried them...

They are ok... I don't need much to get me to the finish line... and since it is getting cold I am fine... I think even without it. For me I think it was when I was sweating like mad I needed the electrolytes to keep me from tailing off after 45 minutes... but since it has gotten cold I am not sweating that much at all so I think I will be fine... as for carbs... I don't think I am getting to the point where that is giving me a problem... I think I'll take the beens with me... just in case... and depending on where the water stops are... take them or not....

I think I will be fine if I drink 1/2 a small bottle of sports drink 15-20 minutes before the race... unless it is over 60 degrees race day...

If its just electrolytes you are looking for these can be great. Easy to carry and just pop a couple every 40 minutes and your good to go. Hammer makes
great products. I also recommend their Heed sports drink.
