No sleep, Sickness, and questions

Hello everyone;

My name is “Noguchi”. Before I get to my general question let me give you some background on myself. I am an English teacher in Japan and a new father. I get up at 6AM and come home at 4PM where I take care of my kid until my wife comes home at 9-10PM at night. Before I had my kid I had plenty of time to practice Karate and workout. Since having my kid I have gotten on a schedule that doesn’t allow me a lot of sleep and I have no time to myself.

With the lack of sleep I have become ill more and more and workout less and less. I am still skinny (minus the belly) but I feel a double chin approaching more and more (Noooooo!) The question(s) I have are simple.

1) How can I maximize the effect of my sleep and does napping help?
2) I hate not to exercise, are there low impact exercises that I can do while ill that won’t make me vomit or fall down due to light headedness?
3) (Off the topic but…) I can hear my knees when I go upstairs and when I get ill they really ache (I am only 30 years old, I shouldn’t have knee problems yet). Is there an exercise or preventative to keep my knees healthy into the future?
4) (Again, off the topic) I try to do aerobics when I can to reduce fat. One area of my body that I am really concerned about (Not so much concerned as watching intently) in my neck. I don’t have a very pronounced chin and so if I get chunky I can really see it in the chin area. I also practiced judo in my youth and one problem associated with judo practitioners in old age is a weak neck.. How can I slim down and strengthen that area?

Today I have asked so many questions that it is hard to keep track of. From lack of sleep to weak knees and neck I have many areas I need to improve upon. Whatever advice you can you give would be appreciated. I hope that with your advice I can improve my health and stay healthy from now on.

All the best;
Noguchi

i can't help you with most of this, but I can say that if you are tired and have the opportunity, take the nap. I can't remember what the sleep cycles are, but it's something like either 20m or 1 1/2h ... not more, not less. Has something to do with sleep cycles. If you don't hit it right, you will be groggy.

Young kids are fascinated by movement, and as long as they still feel like the centre of your world they will not mind you training in fact they love it.
There are low impact aerobic dvds or you tube videos and these could be a good start. If you are doing these with youngster watching the TV and you they will usually try to copy and this improves co-ordination, if you congratulate every attempt they make, it becomes a positive image in their mind and making a few mistakes yourself adds to their amusement and feeling that it's OK not ot be perfect.
Many new parents sleep while the children do. A workout where you keep the new child focused on you and possibly doing some of the activity, will tire them, a quick feed after and they will doze off, and so can you. If they wake needing you, they will always let you know.

I'm not sure how to maximize the effect of your sleep, but if you're ill or stressed, then your sleep could be negatively affected. I'm pretty sure that napping could be a benefit for you... I don't see how it could hurt. Some of the time restraints and lack of sleep are just what is to be expected with having a new baby and with time, that should improve.

As for the lightheadedness and vomiting, have you seen your doctor about this? These are serious health issues that should be addressed. The knees should be checked as well.

How is your diet doing? This could be something that is affecting your sleep, knees, energy levels, and overall health.

Damn I feel sorry for you man :(

I don't know what to say really :/ Try getting some Vitamins plus maybe, as you're so stressed maybe your body is lacking... Lots of Fruit which gives you vitamin C, wakes you up and keeps you light most of all, maybe a nice orange juice every morning.

I guess Napping when you can would definitely do. Altough I have studied that theoretically Naps don't really recharge the body, that only happens at Night time during the 'long sleep'. Anyway, I Wish you to find a new balance as soon as possible, between work, family rest and exercise. I know what it means when you want to workout but you haven't got time, but even worse, is when your body is like telling you "I can't, I need to sleep...", Mental Tireness is even worse...

Sleep is going to have such a huge impact on your lifestyle and those around you that it has to be prioritised. An exhausted dad is no good to anyone. Try and adapt your sleeping habits so you nap every few hours where possible. Leave a down comforter on your couch or wherever so you can catch the odd bit of sleep. Sleep will rejuvenate you, giving you more energy to look after your baby and exercise. Sleep also regenerates the bodily hormones which keep your metabolism going.
As for knee problems, I know your pain buddy and I need some help on that side too!

Hello,
If you ain't sleep then do some hard work like gyming or dance practice or gardening whatever it takes human efforts. After you will feel tiredness and you will sleep...
