No costume for me! Too big for anything!

I'm having a very challenging day. I am a part-time actor and I was just booked for a new television show. I went for my fitting today and there was exactly one dress that came close to fitting me. Because they couldn't finish zipping the back of it, I was sent away with no costume for the filming. While I was assured that something will be found for me to wear -- it's a wedding party scene, I feel humiliated. I am the heaviest I have been in years and it's having an impact on my work. I am very pleased that I am sticking to my exercise goals and have been working with a trainer three times a week for the past two years and I generally choose healthy foods, it is upsetting to have this kind of experience.

Does anyone have suggestions for getting past the negative thoughts and focusing more on the positives?

Too big for the costumes they had, does not mean you are overweight at all. I think we all know that TV, movies & modelling portray a skewed image of the female body. You were picked for the role-well done! You are also doing something about getting fit- good for you! Can you wear a dress of your own for the role so that you feel good about it? I'm sorry that they have made you feel this way. It sounds to me that you have good reason to be proud of what you are doing.

Yes, start tracking your food and seeing what can be done for your diet. A good way to do that here is to start a diary and tell us a bit more about yourself so people can provide more advice and support. In my experience that helps with both getting you on track and those negative feelings, once you take some control of the problem you will feel better, even before you lose much weight.

Cate makes a good point, the body that fits into a stock TV wardrobe may be underweight.

Best of luck to you!

That does sound like an upsetting experience - though the wardrobe section of the production company probably felt pretty bad too! After all, you were chosen for the role, and it's their job to fit the actors.
As far as positives go - there's that you have taken control of both eating and exercise, that you do know what you want to achieve, (not a stick-thin television figure as defined by the wardrobe department, but the weight you yourself are setting as goal), and that you are right now an employed actor - three very significant positives!

I am an engineer and have had at times the occasion to visit plants or labs where I was required to wear protective gear. Usually I could not find anything that fit, most of the time I had to force myself into whatever they had, leaving it unzipped or unbuttoned. However a couple of times that wasn't allowed so I had to sit and wait for others to make the tour, that sure was embarrassing. Since then I have mostly avoided going to places like that, not always the best career move, but it is less embarrassing.

I kind of know how you must feel, but body size for engineers is a lot less important than for actors. I am sure it is worse for you.

Well I hope that you were able to get things sorted out. I'm sorry that you had to experience that and that they didn't have more size options. But I have to echo what others have said in that I think people generally understand that TV or movie sizes do not always reflect the norm. It sounds like you have been doing healthy things for yourself in exercising regularly with a trainer for such a long time, keep it up!

I do have to say, congrats on getting the role though. I really hope they get it sorted out for you!
