I've decided that enough is enough, I need to start doing something about my weight. It's something I want to do for myself, to become healthy. I'm tired of trying to hide the fact that simple activities can leave me out of breath. But I have just lacked any motivation up to this point. I would pick a date to start, and end up eating a pack of cookies.....
Having moved to the Netherlands a year ago to be with my dutch boyfriend, has left me without a large support group on this side of the atlantic. Thats why I am here, to seek support, ánd advice. I really have no clue where to go from this point now. I'm unsure which combination of diet and exercise is right for me. Anyone with some advice and experiences to share, I would love to hear from you.
Thanks, Sarah.

Welcome to the site!

Welcome...

There are as many diet plans here as there are people here... you really have to find one that you are comfortable with because it's the one you will stick to... What I think most people find, is simply cutting their calories is enough, not giving up the foods they love, but simply watching portion control.

One suggestion I would have, is that you get yourself an online food journal, and be vigilant about recording what you are eating... every spoonful of everything counts.... (www.fitday.com and www.sparkpeople.com are two of my favorites but there are 1000s out there...

Coming here and wanting to make achange is your first step... that's a good thing...

Exercise is something that you should be doing, it doesn't have to be going out and running five miles, but at least getting yourself moving on a daily basis is a place to start. Going on a daily walk, even with your boyfriend, is a good thing... use it as a bonding exercise as well...

Support and encouragement are available to you..

I would also suggest that you start an diary here, in the diary section for you to start recording your journey...

Good luck and welcome

Maleficient has a good plan there, but I'd like to add something to it. For the first few days or even week of recording all of your food, eat as your normally would. Don't lie to your food journal, nobody else is going to read it and so you'll only hurt yourself in the long run if you do. This way you'll get a good and hopefully accurate idea of how much food you're eating a day, what kind of foods you're eating, and when you're eating them. Once you know where you start, you can figure out where you need to be.

Good luck! :)

excellent point, beagle... i think it's difficult to cut back on something unless you have a really accurate counting of what you are currently eating...

Thank you

I really liked the sparkpeople.com site. Thank you so much for all the information and I'll be sure to keep posting.
