Newbie with freeweights

Hello,

I am a newbie to exercising and weightlifting. I recently got a set of freeweights (I think that's what they are called - the metal bars that you can secure weights onto the end of, one bar in each hand) and would like some help developing an exercise plan to help me lose some weight and maybe build some lean muscle.

I'm 26 years old, and spend most of my time sitting in front of a computer. I'm around 300 pounds (and as a result cannot engage in things like jogging or running - I get shin splints quite quickly).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
