Newbie trying to get in shape!

Hi All,

So, I've been putting off the getting in shape thing for quite some time now. Everytime i start, i stop about 1 week later. So, I'm trying a different approach, lets see if it works.

I'm 21 year old about 155lbs 5'6 (and some change). I'm just trying to get in shape and get toned abit.

I'm starting out just running, pushups and situps for now. Then get more into it hopefully in the months to come. My biggest problem is finding the time to do all this with school!

Tonight I started my running training. I treadmilled 1 mile in 15 minutes. Pitiful, I know. My goal is to get to 1 mile in 6 minutes in sometime to come. Then work on 2 miles in 15 minutes.

I think that keeping a live thread may boost my enthusiasm to get running everyday, so lets see what happens.

I am welcome to other suggestions.

Welcome Mike! Good luck with your goals.

Hi Mike :)

Good luck with your goals, 6min miles are elite status in my book bro! I definately think it can be done but dont set your goals so high right off the bat, make your goals manageable but short-term. Maybe try after 2weeks to go to 11min miles, then 10min miles etc....but switch it up so it doenst get monotonous. As far as time goes you HAVE to set aside time to get in to shape! And its more than just going to the gym IMO...its eating right, sleeping right, and keeping your mental aspect healthy too. I have been running seriously now for almost a year...I started out like you with 12min miles but now am @ 8.5 min miles but that is only if I run a couple of miles. I can now run up to 10 miles but its over 10min/miles then....but the point is Im training my body to do what I want....I want to eventually run a 1/2 marathon....gonna do my first 10k this summer and I have all the confidence that I can accomplish it w/out any problems my concerns are now how fast I can do it.

I guess what Im trying to say is dont worry so much about speed @ first....get a good distance down that keeps your heart pumping but not throbbing to discomfort. Then once you have run that distance for a while and feel comfortable enough then slowly start bumping up your speed....Definately play around w/ HIIT running

Don't even bother because you'll just wind up quitting again. You keep saying how you're 'trying' to do this and 'hopefully' do that. Instead, get yourself motivated and commited to transforming your body into what you want...and then train hard to do it. If you truely want this, then you'll find the time to do it.

Hey Mike.

I was in your shoes not very long ago. If you're anything like me though, that 15min mile will turn into a 10min/mile in like 2 weeks. You just have to get your heart used to working again.
I'm not a running expert but I can tell you what worked for me newb to newb.

Once I got to a 9.5 min/mile pace I switched up the speed or distance. I would do 1 mile at 9.5 pace for a few days then try 1.5 miles at a slower speed then back down to 1 mile but at a 9 minute pace. Once I got down to 9min/mile I tryed 1.5 or 2 miles at a slower pace then back down to 1 mile at 8.5min/mile pace.
Before I knew it(in about a month) I was running for several miles at 9or9.5min/mile and doing 1mile at 7.5or8min/mile.

I hope that made sense to you. After that I changed priorities to weights and haven't run much but I'm starting to see how during a hard weight workout my cardio endurance isn't keeping up. Looks like it'll be back to running for me.

Anyway, best of luck in the future. Keep her lit!
