Newbie and questions about supplements

I am a 37 yr old male who recently lost 30lbs. I went from 267lb to 237lb my goal is around 225lbs. I want to add definition to my upper body and wanted to know what was the best post-workout supplement.

Thanks in advance

Lots of good ones out there, but I actually prefer BeachBody's Results and Recovery Formula. It has the right blend of carbs, protein and vitamins that replenish your stores after a hard workout. As an added benefit, it has a very small amount of creatine, which stimulates muscle growth and endurance.
Be sure to consume it within 1 hour of workouts, and i would only take it when you really push yourself. Otherwise, it won't get into the muscle fibers and really work like its supposed to.
What workouts are you doing? Have you tried P90X? It rocks and I can say from experience, it is ideal for getting the chest definition you're asking about.

Check out some other fitness tips or shop the beachbody store at . I'll be happy to help you.

Thanks to both of you. I do know that I have to do the work and I am willing but just wanted to know what would "boost" my workout or add to my work. Years ago I used whey protein after workouts but I know things change and new products are developed. Thanks again I will check it out.

Protein is def necessary to fuel muscles, but not required post workout. So, yes, get your protein intake daily. Close to 1g per pound per day. Use this calc.

1. Weight in pounds divided by 2.2 = weight in kg
2. Weight in kg x 0.8-1.8 gm/kg = protein gm.

A little creatine would help to add muscle as well, just don't overdo it.

For post workout and to reduce soarness, try a good post workout drink as mentioned.

absolutely! I do it all the time. Go easy on it for the first week or so, prob 1/2 of the recommended dosage for your body weight. Some builders recommend a "loading" phase, but if your goal is to gain some good lean muscle, (not Arnold like:), then just use about 5 or so g/day. Also, you'll want to cycle after about 4-6 weeks of use, which means don't take any to flush the system out. This prevents your body from getting used to the supplement.

Last thing, keep in mind you may gain a little weight using creatine (new muscle\water), but remember its part of the process.

ok thanks!! One more thing, I will be working out after work around 7pm. So what do you suggest as a preworkout snack or supplement.

Are Supplements Necessary?

We’ve covered everything you need to know about nutrition. At this point, must people who’re doing the Ideal Fitness System start wondering about supplements. Maybe you’re wondering too. And maybe you have questions like:

Do you need supplements?
Do supplements work?
Are supplements safe?

Read on for the answers to these questions and more…

Do You Need Supplements?

Here’s the short answer: No. You can lose weight and gain muscle without them. However, that doesn’t mean that supplements aren’t helpful. And that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take them. It just means that they aren’t 100% necessary.

Now let me be clear about something. When I’m referring to supplements, I’m referring to 100% legal dietary supplements and similar items. For example, whey protein is a common bodybuilding supplement, and one that you’ll likely find useful as well.

I am NOT, however, referring to illegal supplements like steroids or banned diet pills. Those sorts of supplements come with a lot of nasty side effects. For example, those who don’t know what they’re doing with steroids may have to deal with nasty side effects like rage (‘roid rage), the development of “man boobs,” acne, liver problems, baldness, sterility… and the list goes on.

Point is, we’re not going to deal with those types of supplements. And you don’t want them anyway, since you’re not going for the look where your arms are bigger than most people’s thighs. You want to attract women, not have them running away, screaming in horror!

Instead, we’ll focus on dietary supplements. But here’s the thing…

Before you even start thinking about supplements, you need to get your nutrition in order. If you’re not eating a good balance of protein, carbohydrates and essential fatty acids, then there’s no need for you to supplement. You might even be throwing your money away if you’re supplementing but not eating right.

So clean up your diet and seek out healthy food first… then later you can think about supplements.

Are Supplements Magic Bullets?

No. Supplements of any kind don’t work unless you do.

Sure, the ads on TV tell a different story. For example, just start paying attention to all those weight loss pills. Here you have people with toned, beautiful bodies who are supposedly taking the diet pills. And the inference is that all they had to do was pop a pill and the melt magically melted off.

Of course it doesn’t work that way. And if you pay attention to the fine print (or whatever the announcer says really fast at the end of the commercial), you’ll see that the pill only works as part of a nutrition and exercise program.

But here’s the thing: If you put in place a good nutrition and exercise program, then you probably don’t need the pill!

Are Supplements Safe?

If they’re dietary supplements (such as whey protein), then yes… they’re very safe. Basically, they’re just like food.

For all other supplements, you need to check the label and do your research. And if you’re taking any herbs, keep in mind that people who have allergies to things like ragweed are often allergic to herbs.

I would recommend that you take supplements that does not cause your body to over exercise, try this to get some that will keep your body burning the fat and getting your lean.

Hope it helps! Keep up the good work
