newb and dont know where to start with weight training

hi guys, I've pretty much not eaten enough my entire life and kinda spent the last bunch of years living off cigarettes and coffee, but ive been fighting to kick it, and trying to eat a lot more in general, and focusing on decent foods as well as taking supplements. Other than being in terrible shape (super unhealthy skinny, im about 5'8" and trying to push over 125lbs, im prob around 120 now) Im in good health and 23, so Im not really afraid of hurting myself too badly.

I used to be a cross country runner, and I can handle giving myself an excellent cardio/leg&core workout 3 nonconsecutive days pretty easily since I like... know what im doing.

but in the weight room ive always been awkward and felt like I had no clue what I was doing at all - Ive always had trouble finding someone to spot me, and having a definite idea of what I should be working out and how - I get confused as to what machines or freeweight excersizes I should be doing and just exactly how to do them.

Im looking to just get a general start on training myself 3 days a week, and running on the days in between that so I consistently am getting a workout. I bought a gym membership at a planet fitness near my school so I can use it in between classes on days when I have breaks.

what should I be looking into doing to start myself off? Am I stuck using freeweights, or can I like totally replace them with machines - which would be easier than trying to find someone to spot me, or learn the technique of any lifts?

is there like any general template of what I should do, and how many sets/reps of it?

any help is greatly appreciated. Ive been doing crunches and push ups on my own, but Im certain working out with weights would be beneficial to me, and I already have the membership, so Id like to get started and going hard as soon as I can really... Im already hitting it hard running, although im nowhere near doing that great yet haha - but thats not rly the point yet.
