Sport new years resolution to go veg

Sport Fitness
Hey all, Ive got an idea for my new years resolution and it is to stop eating meat..or atleast slow it down a bit. I was just wondering on what supplements I should take when I turn veggie. No, this is not because I love animals so much..I just really hate plants and want them to suffer. Did I steal that joke..yes. Anyway, any info or advice will be appreciated.

Well... I guess I better make up for the animals you wont be eatting.

May I ask why you want to stop eatting meat?

There are no substitutes for meat and fish, only supliments to make the effects 'less bad'.

Is this a moral issue that you don't wanna eat cute furry animals? Ethical?

cuz I gotta tell you, people are omnivores...we're meant to eat meat AND plants. its not a 'health decision' to go veg or vegan...its a moral decision.

and frankly, no matter how you slice it, God/Buddah/Jesus/Zeus....put animals here for us to consume to sustain life.

ok i am a vegetarian, and i do it for the moral reasons. I dont believe animals are put on this earth for us to eat...i believe they were put on this earth to live...just like us. After doing much research and learning what goes on at the slaughterhouses including watching videos....and further learning aboutthe animals themselves...i decided that i dont want to support that industry. After seeing the cruel torture they put the animals through, meat doesnt seem that appetizing to me. I grew up in a family who were all about animal rights and welfare and i always had many pets. Just seeing how attached i am to my animals, i know that animals have feelings and they are pretty intelligent creatures, they feel pain like we do. Meat does not give us any nutrient that we can not find elsewhere. So why should i eat the dead flesh of a previously suffering animal. Not to mention the other parts that are in some meats such as their rectum and stool. But anyways...i know that by me becoming a vegetarian, i am not saving the world nor am i stopping the slaughterhouses...but by me EATING meat, i am supporting that industry. I am not a crazy vegetarian who tries to convert people, my boyfriend eats steak right in front of me and i dont say a word, as long as i receive that same respect back. My advice....becoming a vegetarian cant be decided in one night, its something that you have to firmly believe in, meat is all around us and to truly pass it up takes a strong passion in ure belief system....as for replacing nutrients, some things i rely on are:

Soy milk
Tofu
Morningstar makes fake chicken, bacon, sausage, hotdogs....go to their website and u would be surprised how many things are avaliable. and they taste great
Sead, nuts
Beans
Assortment of Vegetables
Dairy
Brown Eggs
multi vitamin

Good luck!

Mary - I dont want to go into this in massive detail as we talk about this quite often.

Eatting animals from 'slaughterhouses' is not the only option. And the information you get from the internet is only 'worst case senario'.
I get all my meat from local farms, and only buy the prime cuts. the other meat gets used in other foods, while the hearts and brains go to local schools for science lessons, the hair and skin get used as well and the bones are used to make stock and soup.

All I'm trying to say is that its not as bad as you may think. Buying organic meat and farm produce helps the 'nice side' of the meat industry, this will help them grow and compete against the 'slaughterhouses'. Simply not eatting meat will not change anything.

If you eat eggs then thats just as bad. Even if the chickens are free range, their only function is to produce eggs for us to eat, when they are old they will be killed for their meat.

If you consume dairy and eggs then you are not a vegetarian, the name for that is ovo-lacto-vegetarian (eggs-dairy-vegetable).

In the wild, animals eat other animals. Eating meat is not something humans invented because we are evil. It is natural. But, to each his own.

I understand the point but what are your shoes made out of? Leather by chance? What is your purse made out of? Aren't you contributing to killing animals buy purchasing your workout shoes?

and you should see the conditions that egg producing chickens are kept in.

that's why I only 'believe' in the vegans who literally wear only hemp, cotton or synthetic fabrics/shoes, and don't touch ANY animal products, ever.
if its a moral stance, then you have to go all the way...otherwise its just a farce IMO.

its survival of the fittest on this planet, and you have to step on, eat, kill any lower species to ensure that you remain the 'fittest species'.

otherwise, surrender your humanity, your cojones, and then walk around like a sheep...because that's what you're reducing yourself to...a lower species.

We evolved into what we are today by eating a diet of meat, greens, fruits, various vegetables and nuts. Not by eating grains, legumes, beans and dairy.

And that Morningstar Farms food is just as processed as a Twinkie.

If you are worried about animals being treated cruelly in slaughterhouses, buy Kosher. The animals are raised on diets with no hormones, antibiotics etc and they are killed under strict protocols to minimize pain and suffering.

It is simply a lifestyle choice. It is not about being right or wrong. I am vegetarian because of where I come from, my religion and the way I was brought up. Now I live in a different country, I don’t believe in any traditional religion and I am all grown up but still a vegetarian only because of what I think. As humans, we are animals but we think and we continuously progress physically and mentally. We have emotions and feelings. Not eating meat and thus not contributing to killing of more animals is just a feeling of sympathy towards living animals. Different people have different levels and kinds of feelings. You are not right if you argue why do vegetarians wear belts/shoes/clothes (leather) and consume dairy or even eat plants. It is impossible to live in the world without hurting or using something or someone and humans (animals) want to live, don’t we?

As far as replacements of meat/fish goes, Mary is correct. If you take my example, and there are millions like me, it is not a replacement at all since I have never consumed meat. Vegetarianism has been evolving for about 5 centuries in the Indian subcontinent. Actually, there are so many grains, seeds, spices, vegetables, roots, oils and nuts in India (and now in Indian stores abroad) that have never made an entry like Chinese/Japanese in the developed nations. Even there may not be an English translation for many of them. It has been proven scientifically that malnutrition in India is due to poverty and not due to mostly vegetarian population. Here in US people generally think that if you are a vegetarian, you have very limited options. I tell them it is just about exploration and awareness. If you only take India (multiply by 25 states multiply again by 500 or some castes), you got yourself thousands of recipes, types of foods and source of diverse nutrition.

In the end, be happy no matter what you eat :)

so, 500 years of vegetarianism vs. 25,000 years of omnivorism.

But you are right, its a debate that NEITHER side is going to be able to win/convince the other side that they are correct.

I guess my biggest point is to really understand why you're going vegan/vegetarian...do it for you, not because your hippie girlfriend/boyfriend wants you to, or because you saw some PBS special on how they treat the calves sold as veal.

You are not right if you argue why do vegetarians wear belts/shoes/clothes (leather) and consume dairy or even eat plants.
Thats just a matter of opinion. Either way, the argument was, "I dont believe animals are put on this earth for us to eat...i believe they were put on this earth to live...just like us"

Given that, I was questioning why the animals could be turned into belts or shoes and that was ok but once a human was going to eat an animal, then it was wrong. I really don't care either way, to each his own. I just enjoy arguing the subject when the opposing argument doesn't really make sense:D

well that shows you don't understand the depth of the other view. people do wear belts made of synthetic fiber and non-leather shoes. i don't because at present that's (not eating meat) my tolerance limit. what i wanted to say is complete abstinence is not for people leaving in the material world (you and me both). this forum (written medium) is not the best place for such discussions. i was just expressing my opinion and nothing more than that.

Same here, and I'm not gonna get involved or argue, but I always thought of this. People who choose not to eat meat because of the cruelty of animals never have any better solution. It would cost $60 for a steak if the animals were treated "fairly". I have a dog, I love her more than most things in the world, so I fully understand that animals have feelings like we do. But as someone mentioned, the highest species has to find ways to survive...

It would not cost 60 dollars for a steak. I'm always trying to find meat/poultry that was free range and at least had some kind of a life. I don't think it's natural at all to eat a chicken that lived it's whole life in a battery cage with 8 other chickens on top of it. That's just sick and while I'm not in any way spiritual or religious I don't think it's a good idea to eat something that lived such an absolutely terrible unnatural life. And as was poinetd out earlier, buying free range animals supports the good side of the industry and if more people did this the free range industry would grow and then there would be more competition, thus making the meat cheaper.
