New to working out.

I'm 21 year old male and i've never really worked out in my life. I'm 6 ft. tall and 245. My main goal is to lose weight. I hate gyms cause i'm fat and don't want to be an embarrassment. So at home I have a bowflex treadclimber 3000 that i've been using for 45 minutes 6 days a week for the last 2 weeks.

Also, i just got the bowflex select tech dumbells and bench and have started lifting cause I heard the more muscle I build the more fat I can lose.

Now i've only lost a few pounds so far how can I improve my results. I try to eat healthier and i'm definitly drinking a lot more water. However, cravings get to me I mean I have to have pizza and pasta once in awhile right?

welcome :)

i feel its perfectly fine to indulge every once and awhile. most who give the foods they love up completely then begin to resent their new approach to eating and give in too often. there's no need to be 100% perfect because being close to that is get enough and will help to keep one sane ;)

I also don't do well with deprivation, so would agree that you should occasionally have what you enjoy.

I would also tell you that if you are made to feel embarrassed at the gym, go to a different one. I love my health club because everyone is treated with respect and it is widely acknowledged that everyone has their own goals, challenges, etc. It's a very supportive environment. I kind of need to have a workout place outside of home, because home has too many distractions (read: unfinished projects, chores...) If what you are doing works, stay with it!

I have always stayed away from the Meat Market/pick-up joint gyms. blech

hello tomahawk, and welcome aboard mate.

My thoughts on your thread are that you seem desperate to lose weight almost too desperate. you will work yourself stupid doing that much cardio, try to cut back to 3 times a week 45mins. i know you want to lose the weight but it aint just going to fall off overnight, it took me the best part of 1 and a half yrs to lose 28lbs of fat mass and it wasnt easy untill i read up on protiens carbs and fats metabolism etc. then it started to drop off once i incorporated the right diet with the right traing and rest. what i'm saying is before you jump in at the deep end you must learn to swim. do reaserch on weight training cardio and all aspects of nutrition, only then you can develop a diet and training program that suits you, otherwise you will be wasting your time mate. google the following basics and read up on them

protien
carbohydrate
fat
Basic Metobolic Rate
Body Mass Index
fat loss
muscle building

good luck, if you need anymore help i charge 100 pounds per hour, lol only jokin you'll find me on ere somewhere

Hold your f**king head up high and get in the gym! There is NOTHING to be embarrased about. The people who should be embarrased are the people who know they need to lose some weight yet they still shovel plates of food into their mouth and sit on the couch all day!

Oh yea and.......

Welcome!

:)

Thanks for all the replys I really appreciate it. It has giving me a lot to think about. I'll definitly do some more research.

hello tomahawk

I agree with Ed about working too much so early. I don't necessarily feel that 45 minutes per day, 6 days per week, is out of the realm of the possible, or even the realm of appropriate. However, my key point is that the progression to get there should be longer than 2 weeks for sure.

Something else to consider is your exercise intensity. If the 45 minutes is performed at a very low intensity, it may actually be a relatively low amount of total exercise volume. Yet I suspect you're givin' 'er - maybe even jumping straight into intervals. Obviously, the greater risk of complications occurs as intensity increases (even the risk of early overtraining and burn-out).

My advice: Start modestly, 3-5 days per week, and keep a relatively low intensity for the majority of your exercise duration. For resistance training, give yourself at least 4 weeks of light weight conditioning exercise, and focus on good form and range of motion. The foundations you will build in this manner will enhance every aspect of your training as you progress.

Think long-term, and give yourself credit for having begun...

Remember those fit people in the gym didnt always look that way, some people think because they have a few muscles, they can be di<ks. Watch them because most of the time they arent even lifting properly. I watched these two idiots the other day at the gym, doing bent over barbell rows, so much weight they were only lifting the bar like 2 inches per rep, talking about "My form sucks today." Ya no ****, drop the weight about 40lbs dumbass. Sorry, had to release there. Welcome and good luck
