hello everyone,

I'm a physically inactive philosophy professor, 69 years old. I'd like to get down from my present weight of 199 lbs to, at first anyway, 188 lbs and weight no more than that for my son's wedding next August 11th. My avatar shows him and his fiance.

For the last several years, I've been eating in a crazy way: virtually nothing until about 6 PM, then dinner, binging and grazing till bed at midnight.

Just this past week, I STARTED to change that, losing about 3 lbs. Thought I don't have breakfast, maybe I should, I have an early lunch, about noon or so.

Then dinner at around 7 or 8 PM. Then mostly Salad grazing till about midnight, when sleep comes.

What should I NEXT do, to become yet more sensible?

I am hopeful of getting useful help here based partly on this experience: Just in the last couple of months, I joined a forum for advice on investing and personal finance - the bogleheads forum - and got terrific advice from members there. Very, very sensible, and very, very profitable. Hope I can do even half as well here.

Please help this old,

Portly Prof,

I also am new to this form. I just read your post and couldn't help but read the part about breakfast! As a professional Nutrition and Health Coach one of the FIRST bits of information I share with clients starting out on a health quest is the importance of breakfast. A good breakfast rich in slow burning carbs, fiber and protein is integral to fueling your fat burning furnace for the day!

Hi PortlyProf

From personal experience it's important to find a plan that fits in with your lifestyle.

I know your eating salads etc and this is all good but only if you think you can keep to this.

I appreciate 'Liz' said breakfast is important but I fast twice a week and on those days I never eat breakfast but i've still lost weight as I overall eat less calories than my body requires over time.

I recently had my blood tested and although I eat pastries, chocolate, cake etc etc I have very good markers of health (I do eat fruit and veg though to lol).

As long as your following the basic rule of fat loss i.e. you eat less calories than your body requires you will lose weight.

Let me know if you need more advice.

Hi Portlyprof,

I am also new to the forum, but so far have read lots people out there with great advice! :)

You say your are inactive........ahh haaa I think you might be telling yourself something there! :)

Is it possible for you to start walking or include some sort of fitness program into your day? I really think that helps the mind and the body become fitter and more energised!

Also it would be great for you to start eating breakfast as the more regular your meals are the better your metabolism starts working for you...............and doesn't go into self preservation mode when you starve yourself by skipping meals.

Anyway, good luck with the advice here and good luck with the weight loss!

Warm regards

Prue

I'm glad you are working on this now. At the age of 69, you probably are aware of the health risks of a poor diet and lack of motion. My advice would be to eat 6 meals a day.

Breakfast consisting of oatmeal or a whole grain cereal.

A snack mid day, like a handful of almonds.

A light lunch, like a tuna sandwich with low fat mayo and no top, just the bottom slice of bread.

Mid afternoon snack could be some celery with peanut butter (the natural kind you have to stir).

Dinner on a medium sized plate (large plates just want to get filled up!). This could be some low carb veggies like broccoli, cauliflower, romaine lettuce. There are many to choose from. A chicken breast (lean meat / seafood) and 1/4 cup of whole grain rice. Never wait til after 7PM to eat your dinner. For salads, use low fat dressings. Use olive oil to cook your meat or put on salads. Your body needs some fat.

An evening snack could be some soy crisps (sold in many stores, with the health food). Around 17 is a good amount.

Drink lots of water each day. At least 8 glasses.

You don't have to start a major exercise program. Just start moving more. Walk farther to the store, go up stairs. More of what you are already doing. Then build into more as you feel more fit.

It isn't just the calories you take in, but the quality of the calories. You want to eat fresh, nutritious foods. If you give your body regular fuel, it will not feel like it's starving and won't hold onto the fat stores. At one meal a day, your body has been hanging onto fat for dear life!

If you have any questions, just let me know. Hope this helps you.
