New to the forums, looking for upper body strength advice

Hello all,

I am new here looking for some advice on building my upper body. I'm 29 and was lazy/out of shape for the first 28 years of my life. I started running this past february to lose weight and to get off my butt. I lost a lot of weight from a combo of eating better and running. Around July I decided to sign up for Tough Mudder so that I could challenge myself and give me more motivation/reason to exercise. My problem is I can't do a pull-up. I have a weak upper body. I started lifting weights and doing circuit training in August and it has helped a lot but I still can't do any pull-ups. Tough Mudder is now 2 months away and I am starting to get concerned. My cardio is fine as well as my leg strength. Can I get any tips on what I could/should be doing to build up to pull-ups in the next 2 months? Any advice is appreciated.

Have you heard of negative pullups? Here is a video that shows the technique - Video: How to Do a Negative Pull Up Exercise | eHow.com

What equipment do you have to work with? Are you working out at home or at the gym?

I have free weights, a bench press and a pull up bar. I have worked on negative pull-ups but I don't feel like I am getting anything from them. Maybe I am doing them incorrectly?
