New to the forums and have a few questions

First I guess I'll explain a bit about myself. I'm 26 years old and 250 lbs. I used to be in decent shape through no real effort, I was just pretty active. I was in a gasoline explosion a few years ago and after being bed ridden for 3 months I got really into eating pizza and watching movies. Slowly but surely my weight started going up and I kept telling myself that tomorrow is the day I was going to start doing something but of course that day never came. Well now I'm fed up with it and got a gym membership. I don't have a set schedule yet, I'm trying to find a time that most people aren't there and then go twice a day. On to my questions.

First, I met with a physical trainer at the gym and he wanted to do a bunch of tests like bmi and some other stuff and I can't remember the exact bmi he told me now but he said that I would never get below 200 lbs or maybe even 210 with my build. Is that even possible? I'm 6 ft tall and have pretty broad shoulders if that helps any. If I had to pick a goal number it would be 180, but really I just want to be in shape.

My second question is about food. I'm trying to come up with a diet that will work for me so basically chicken, eggs, and lean red meat. Do I absolutely need vegetables to lose weight? I know it's really weird but I can't eat vegetables besides broccoli and celery without throwing up. I'm sure it's psychological because of something in my childhood, but I don't know that I'm really prepared to tackle my disgust for tomatoes and onions at the moment.

And then my third question, what would be my best option at the gym for just pure weight loss? I have, in my opinion, plenty of muscle so I don't want to gain any but I also don't want to lose any, or at least not much in either direction. I just didn't know if I should focus only on cardio or if weight machines would help with the weight loss if done right.

Anyway thanks for reading and I appreciate any help.

hi welcome to the forum :)
first of all, i dont agree with your gym instructor.. my husband/brother/cousins are 6ft and above, and they all have different weights..my husband 6'2= 194lbs, brother 6'0= 275lbs, cousin 1 = 6'1 = 210, cousin 2 6'0 = 175 lbs
above all,,do you follow tennis??? roger federer is 6'2 and weighs only 184lbs and he has broad shoulders :)
you are quite young and your goal (180lbs) sounds great..cause my cousins happens to be of the same age and height as you are..he looks just perfect at 175lbs..hes very sporty as well..
i am a woman so i can only tell you about the changes that i noticed in the men around me when they joined the gym:p
my husband's weight was 216lbs when he decided to be a regular gym rat :p..he looked good even then but he has a desk job so he didnt wanna put on anymore weight because of his inactive lifestyle..so simply halved his food intake..and hit the gym 5-6 times a week..and now hes 194lbs..hes 33 but looks very young..and all his backaches and fatigues are gone..he tries to take as much protein as he can per day,,like 50% of his diet..and hes going great..today we will start the 60 days bodyshred plan by jillian michael...if you wanna give it a try, you are welcome to join us and record your progress everyday on the forum :) ill post the thread here in a while
cardio is the best way of losing weight..weight lifting, as far as i have heard produces more muscles, hence they burn more calories,,so you lose more weight in the long run..so try to mix up both..

2nd question..:p have u even considered trying asian cuisine? we pakistanis make awesome veges :D i bet you will end up licking your fingers if i offer you my vegetable curry :p i hated tomatoes like anything..i can relate with what you go through when you try t eat a tomato...but thanks God i grew up to loveee them..onions are my fav too..
i can give you my chicken kadahi recipe..which includes chicken and tomatoes only..but u cook the tomatoes to the point where you cant see them anymore :p they just become a paste..or if you like, you can grind them beforehand and then add to the chicken..let me know if you are interested..ill post the recipe here :)
you can improvise and add the chopped onions too..or any other vege..im a vege lover..gonna make ladyfiners/okra tonight ..:D
best of luck with your weight loss plan..

BMI is a poor measure, it is possible your trainer is correct depending on your bone structure and muscle mass.

If you have trouble with veg other than broccoli etc then a keto diet would be a good fit, and works very well for cutting fat without compromising your lean muscle which you want to keep. There are increasing numbers of studies showing the health benefits.

as for training at the gym, you need a mix of both. Strength training will help you maintain your lean muscle, when in a calorie deficit you are highly unlikely to gain muscle no matter what your lifting routine is like.

Thanks for the advice, I will look into that diet. I had never heard of it before but it looks interesting. I've always loved asian food, but my experience is pretty limited to Chinese and Japanese food. I had a couple friends from those countries in college and they would cook for us on occasion, absolutely delicious.

Also didn't know it was harder to gain muscle in a deficit, that will help a lot.

dragonboas ill share a chicken recipe anyway.. give it a try when you feel like it..
take half chicken..normal sized..any cuts..or your fav ones..
4-5medium sized tomatoes,
4tbs canola or any cooking oil..
salt ...as per your taste..
garlic and ginger paste 1 tsp each.. optional..if you like the taste..
green chillies and green coriander(cilantro) for garnishing..again optional ,,and as much as u like,,
so basically you only need a chicken, oil tomatoes and salt for this recipe..the rest is optional but makes the food so delicious..but again, you dont have asian taste buds so u never know:p

recipe..
add oil into a wok or a bit deep skillet,on a low flame..
add chicken and salt and ginger gaelic paste to the oil, and cover for 15min..
u can check after 10min, the juices will come out of the chicken and it will be soft in no time..
just keep it covered till you think its soft enough,
then add the finely chopped 4 tomatoes, or ground tomato/tomato puree..
turn the heat to medium, cover again for 5 min..
then remove the lid and increase the flame to medium-high..cook for 2,min..until the juices of chicken n tomatoes r dried up..
then reduce the flame to minimum n add chopped cilantro n ggreen chillies,,cover for 2 min...doneeee...

sounds difficult?? hardly takes 25min n its delicious..u can eat it with rice or wholegrain pakistani, rather call it indian chapati/nan :p u can increase the quantities and keep it in the fridge in air tight container..the taste wont change for the next 2-3days ..or even freeze it for weeks..
