New to the forum - few questions

Hi there,

New to the forum so might have a few noob questions.

Put on a bit over lockdown and looking to lose it in a healthy way.

I normally exercise a lot but during lockdown I've tried but with gyms being shut it's been difficult to stay motivated.

A friend of mine mentioned a product called Orlos, no sure if I'm allowed to link to it but here's where my friend recommended it from Link removed

Mods please remove that if its not cool to do that.

My question is, do these things actually work? I know the science checks out but I'm a man in my 40s, the midlife spread is natural - should I go for a product like this as well as working out and exercising regularly or should I avoid these all together?

Don't know anything about it, so I looked it up. It's Orlistat which is apparently an approved drug. The US NIH says "Orlistat is in a class of medications called lipase inhibitors. It works by preventing some of the fat in foods eaten from being absorbed in the intestines." I also found a long list of unpleasant possible side effects. I don't do diet drugs and am no expert, so other than saying it probably works at least to some extent for some people I can't say a lot. I also know eating a proper diet works, without taking drugs.

Your link was removed, the moderators have to do that, newcomers with links in their posts are often spammers, so its a precaution. I don't think you are, so don't let that bother you, just leave the links out of your posts for a while.

Tell us more about yourself, your goals, and I am sure we can help.

It sounds like it basically makes you poo everything straight back out again... I never fancied the idea of uncontrollable diarrhoea.

Personally - I wouldn't bother with any drugs... It sounds like you will be fine without anything like that. Simply make your meals healthier and be active and all should be good. If you need pointers - our pages are full of people doing (or have done) exactly that.

You know, I don't mind the idea of chronic diarrhoea - always feel skinnier afterwards hahaha.

I've picked up some Orlos from that company - should be here in a few days.

Will report back with any findings but from the science i've read I don't see how it can't work in terms of helping me drop a little poundage.

Hello. I'm new too. Share with me how you motivate yourself to lose weight.
I often start to lose weight, but then I do not have enough motivation and this is a vicious circle

Hey Gloria, welcome to the forum!

You ask a good question, but not one to which there is any clear answer. From my own experience there is no such thing as being motivated all the time, and you need to be dieting and working things all the time to be successful at this. So for me the better question is how to stay on track when motivation fails.

I have not been successful doing that until my most recent diet, beginning in May of last year. I honestly don't recall the motivation to start clearly, I think it was a combination of feeling down about being fat and tired all the time and a desire to be healthy. Once I started I did a 3 week "kickstart", low calorie diet. In those weeks I posted a lot here, and got lots of encouragement, support, and advice. After 3 weeks I just decided to keep doing it. I was not motivated everyday, but I did what I had to to stay on track every day. Sought help here and where I could, did things to distact, and sometimes just had to tough it out and do the right thing. I do that by looking at this, the hard days in particular as just one day at a time, a one day commitment is something we can all do. And those one days in a row add up.

After a few months I started exercising, I started slow and have built up to higher levels. Now a year and about 3 months later I am down about 160 pounds and have never been in better shape in my life. I don't see why you can't do something similar, I am no smarter or wiser than you, probably just older and uglier!

Hey you will get more attention if you start your own thread, preferably on the Weight Loss Diary page https://weight-loss.fitness.com/forums/weight-loss-diary.9/ . A good place to tell us more about yourself and your goals.

Best of luck to you!

Diets just don't work for me and I've tried them all.

I think eating smaller meals frequently has worked best for me - and cutting out any food after 8pm.

Not sure if that's a diet but it's a routine I'm pretty good with normally - just all gone to pot over lockdown.

Hey G, good to see you posting.

How so, do you have trouble staying motivated to stay on a diet or is it something else?

That makes a lot of sense, and sure its a diet. I found that getting to something most comfortable to me is what works best, and that seems to be what you are doing.

You should consider starting your own diary and posting your progress.

Whatever works for you, works for you. This year has been challenging for most people. I hope you can get back on track and will feel better soon.

USED AN ADVERTISING LINK AGAIN AFTER ALREADY HAVING HAD A LINK REMOVED IN AN EARLIER POSTING IN THE SAME THREAD

I think it's motivation. I love seeing the changes but I also like eating.

A food diary sounds like a good idea but I always end up blowing it all on the weekend with some dirty take away or calories from delicious delicious beer.

I've SPAMMING LINK REMOVED BY MOD as from what I've read it makes the most sense for me.

Will post back with pictures I've taken this week and more in a few months time to show it's going for me.

Blowing it is a good reason to start a diary! Talking about it can often lead to better awareness and hopefully less "blowing it".

Beware those links.
