New to running.

I've been really trying for about 3 weeks now to lose weight. I cut soda out a while back and have been eating much better. I also scored a soloflex for 35 bucks plus 30 for some missing pieces. I started running last week, I've ran 9 times so far, I run a little over a mile. The first time I did I about died about an eighth of a mile into it. Walked a little and jogged some. By the fourth time I made it all the way without stopping. I started at 265ish and am at 243 now. I really want to go skydiving and there is a wieght limit for it, and many other reasons for this. Just want to be in better shape. Never thought I'd pick up running (well, jogging anyway...for now). I was always like, run, me, WHY? I work nights, so I run when I get home about 3 in the morning. It is nice and cool then and the stars are out really well.
My right knee is sore and I'm going to take a break tonight and run tomorrow. I'll run 4 times this next week. I ran 6 days last week, and 3 the week before. I run the same direction every time and the road slants up tp the right, could this be a reason for a sore right knee? I'm going to run the other direction next or run in the center of the road. After all it is 3 in the morning and there is noone out, I live in a very small town.
What kind of supplements are reccomended? I take protein shake twice a day, when I wake up and after the run and workout. I also take glutamine, glucosamine, vitamins, minerals, and omega 3-6-9.
I've looked through some posts and you all inspired me even more.

welcome to the forum.

at first glance you may be a bit heavy to be running, BUT and this is a big BUTT (hahaha) how old are you, how tall are you, how about sime pictures, etc.

A skydive is a very good goal, being I am a professional skydiver ;) And I happen to do a bit of running.

great supplement list

good for you on dropping soda

9 runs is not many, but it does show some desire. and 3 weeks to lose weight is not even a good start, unless you change LOTS of stuff.

read the nutrition stickies, start a journal, and we will help ya.

sweat daily

I am 28 about 5' 11". As far as the 3 weeks go, I have changed LOTS of stuff. I've lost 22 lbs. in 3 weeks. I don't really eat anything processed, I only eat good stuff now, don't really crave any bad stuff now. As far as the weight goes, I'm not round. I've got some fat to lose, but I'm not rounded. I'll get a pic. up soon. I rally like running it gives me more energy it seems. i look forward to running, I wish I could have last night, but I need to let my knee rest. I figure I'll be down to 230 ish or so by the end of April. That was my original goal, I want to get to 215 or 200 now.

wow! 22 lbs! that's 7 lbs a week

keep it up and the rest of us will be seekign advice from you.

i guess i assumed you were having trouble..... my bad

Okay, took a slow week last week, only ran once and walked it once. Had to let my knee rest. I've ran twice this week and my knees aren't hurting after or the next day, but I skip a day anyways to help it heel and get used to it. I think I am going to try HIIT next week. I plateaued on the weight, I am at 238 now not been dropping in a little while. I am going to give it a shot I can run 1.5 miles without stopping, now I want to get a little more intesity. I'm going to plan out my meals at the beginning of the week also to make sure I get what I need daily and also when I need it. Sorry alot of this is more to do with nutrition, but then doesn't that have a lot to do with running. And I want to get a bike too. Does anyone know where to get a good one reasonable? I want to do that on my off running days.

What is your definition of "reasonable"? Tell me what you want to spend and I'll tell you what you can get. And, are you looking for a road bike, a mountain bike or a hybrid, in other words, do you plan to ride on the road or off road?

Oh yeah, a belated welcome!

That's really pushing it. I'm not a serious cyclist...I got a Trek Navigator 2.0 for not much over $300 It's a "comfort" bike similar to a hybrid. You might be able to get a Schwinn or something like that for your price range

Reasonable is under $200. I would use it more on the road, but would like to be able to ride off road also.

I would look for something used on Craigslist. You also might want to go down to your local bike shop and find out what size bike you ride. This way when you're hunting on CL, you can rule out some of them without seeing them. For example, I ride a 51cm road bike, I might be able to ride a 50 or a 52 but am never going to be able to ride a 58.

For your price range, I would look for a mountain bike. You can always put street tires on it if the off road tires are slowing you down.

Great Job with the running! keep it up! Also I'm glad to see you want to do some biking as well-you shouldn't try to run EVERY day-that is a sure fire way to injury "too much-too fast-too soon" cross traing is so important-even better if you can add a few weight training days to strengthen your legs and build muscle! This is my first time on this site. Its very informative!

On that knee thing. It could very well be due to the road slant it is important you vary terrain.

I have a hybrid bike it has a specialized heard rock comp fram and I have road wheels that I interchange with off road wheels when I got mountain biking. It is definately worth having one you can use for both. I thrash mine pretty hard and it has stood up well.

There's no new bike out there for less than $200 USD that I can recommend in good faith. Your best bet is to go used or save some money for a better bike. You should be able to get a decent 80s or early 90s bike with downtube shifters in decent condition for less than $200 or get a mountain bike. For $400, you can get a new bike that you won't hate in 2 months.

Try torpedo 7 as well.
