New To Excercising/Weight Loss

Hello, everybody. I am a 26 year old male, aprox. 5'7 in height and 196 lbs. I have only within the last few years put on this extra 20-25 lbs and am interested in getting rid of it once and for all. Since the first of March I have been eating between 1000-1200 calories a day, coupled with cardio 5X a week. To be specific I usually try to run between 5 and 6 miles on a treadmill, plus 10 or 20 minutes on an elliptical.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I honestly have no idea what I am doing! Feel free to be as harsh as a place called The Harsh Truth would seem to suggest! :)

You are eating way to few calories and not doing the correct amount of training.

If you continue on that path you will likely plateau before you hit your goal. I would work on upping your calories and included a solid resistance and aerobic program.

Lose it fast, it will come back on fast.

hmmm. i can definently do the higher-calorie thing, but when it comes to weights i am clueless. i'm gonna keep running, but thanks!

I would second that you need to get in on the weight training. I love circuit training because you get the cardio benefits and build muscle. Muscle consumes more energy when your body is at rest, so it helps to turn your body into a calorie burning machine. If you are clueless about a circuit training course here is a link Circuit Training

I would also suggest that you mix up your cardio. As stated earlier, if you don't mix it up you will hit your plateau too early.

Another word of caution...A problem that a lot of guys get into with weight training is that they try and lift too much. Stay away from that and do medium weight higher reps and you will get to where you want to be!
