New Scale Question?

My old scale has been dead since I began my weight loss journey and so I have been weighing myself once a week when I go to visit my mom. I purchased a new scale today and it is a Taylor glass bodyfat scale. I followed all of the instructions exactly and went to weigh myself. The problem is that the last weight I got from my mom's scale was on Sunday and was 207. Today the new scale said 200.8. I know there is no way I could have lost that much, so could my new scale be wrong? Also, could it be due to the fact that I weighed myself with no clothes today? Obviously I don't do that at my mom's house lol. I would love to believe that that was my new weight, but I thought I would get some input here first and try reweighing myself on Sunday.

I don't think your new scale is wrong - maybe your mom's is off? Is her's digital as well? I definitly think wearing clothes makes a difference. Try getting dressed and weighing yourself on your scale again just to see. Jeans and sweaters can for sure add a few pounds. Also you've probably lost a bit since Sunday so that will play in. What time do you normally weight yourself at your mom's - after breakfast or lunch and this morning was it first thing in the morning? I wouldn't worry about it too much and just pick one way of measuring and stick with that - for instance either always weigh yourself first thing in the morning - dressed or not and before or after breakfast - just try to do the same thing every week going forward and that will be the most accurate. Good job though you are almost out of the 200's!!

Yay!!! I am so happy. That was the right weight. It was the clothes that were making it more. My clothes weigh 5 lbs lol. I always wear jeans and usually a small sweater or jacket over a tank top or t-shirt, but I never knew they weighed that much. My original starting weight was taken in the morning with no clothes on my own scale before it broke, so that means that I have lost more than I thought I had and apparently have lost 2 pounds since Sunday at my mom's. I am almost clear of the 200's and will never look back lol. Thanks for your help!

Congratulations! That is great!! I always wear light dress pants and a tank top to my weigh in at WW because I went once wearing jeans and was up and so disappointed so now I have learned to dress light! I've even taken my earrings off to weigh less!!
So happy for you! Keep it up!

Congrats!!1 I totally agree with you on the 200 and never looking back. I too am nearly below 200 and hope I never see it again on the scale. Actually, no.. this has been a lifestyle change.. I KNOW I will NEVER see 200 again once I surpass that mark!!!! I started at 223.8 and am now as of this morning.. butt naked.. hehe... 203.2lbs!

LOL Way to go! I know what you mean, I know I will never fall into my old habits again. Looking and feeling great is too much of an incentive to throw it all away. Besides, I will not be having any more children that I could possibly use as an excuse to put on weight and keep it on.

I weigh first thing in the morning and there can still be significant variations in weight.

I think this week the lowest was 208 vs 214lbs. I think it's down to a little unevenness in the floor and not always standing in EXACTLY the same spot.

Hard to say. I used to work in a chemistry lab and the balances (fancy word for expensive scales) were calibrated daily. Being 1/10% off was quite common. 1/10% on 200bls is 0.2lbs. And dont forget that these things were on a 3 inch thick, leveled stone bench. Most (probably all) were bolted down, leveled and some of them were cased and cost upwards of $10k. And they could still be off over a 24 hour period.

Remembering that I'm a bit more forgiving of my bathroom $20 scales from Wal Mart having a few pounds of margin.

****

I just quickly checked my $20 scales from WalMart with a 40 and 60lb dumbbell and they weighed 41.0, 61.0 and 103lbs together. I think that is about as accurate as you can expect.

To put my scientists hat back on.......My top/bottom weights for this week were 208 and 214 - an average of 211lbs. If the scales I use have an accuracy of 3% then my weight would be better described as 211+/-6lbs or 205-217lbs. For a $20 set, that's probably accurate enough. My wife goes by jeans sizes which probably makes more sense anyway. She's dropped from 9 to 2(!)
