New puppy

My husband and I decided a while back (about 6 months ago) to get a dog. We didn’t make the decision lightly or easily; we considered finances, time availability, training, personality, space limitations, etc – we did our homework.

My husband is a cat person – a huge personality flaw, but I love him anyway :biggrinjester: – however, I am allergic to cats (or more specifically, their dander). It’s very tough to find a cat I am not allergic to, we tried fostering a hairless one for a month and even with medications - which have the charming side effect of leaving me very drowsy - it was terrible. I am a big dog person; nothing pleases me more than to roughhouse with a great dane, fantastic breed. However, my husband is not comfortable around big dogs, and we simply don’t have the space for one in our condo for even a medium dog like a Golden Retreiver (it wouldn’t be fair to the dog).

So we compromised. We found a small dog breed (toy dog) with a big dog personality. At first I wanted to adopt from a kennel, but there really aren't that many in Denmark and most of the dogs were quite large. In the end we settled on a breeder who lives not far from my parents-in-law's place. We are going to pick up our 11-week-old Pekingese puppy on Saturday. His name is Khan, we chose the name for two reasons: 1) the Pekingese is known as “the lion dog” and Khan means lion in Indian and 2) we are both nerdy fans of star trek (“The wrath of Khan”). It seemed to fit. According to the seller the puppy channels a big dog attitude more than any other pups from the litter and he is quite a handful.

Anyway, I just wanted to share with someone as I am very excited and I am sure that everyone else I know is very tired of hearing about it ;) . I bought two puppy training books and I have read so many puppy training tidbits in the last 2 months it’s not even funny; but if anyone has anything extra to add – while my brain may explode – I am happy to risk it for the information.

Edited to add a picture (one of the dozen or so I have):

Yes, I am aware that he looks like an Ewok :)

cute puppy...

I prefer big dogs myself... but it's cute...

Little dogs tend to get away with bad behavior because of they play off their cute factor... so like children - consistent behavior on the part of the dog parents is essential... and you might want to consider obedience school for it when the time is right (and that's generally before it's peed on the bed for the 5th time :D

Looks Mad

Great dog. Awesome face. How much does he weigh? Love his name. Fits him.

I agree with the cat person comment. I think cats are some alien life form.

I've always had big dogs (100 plus pounds) too. I was given a small (10 pound) dog about 3 years ago. Definitely different being around a small dog. He has a short fuse but great personality. Loves to please.

He turns 20 next month. Still acts like a pup.

How very exciting, and what a little sweetheart he looks :)

I'm also a fan of Great Danes - they're just so soppy.

a buddy of mine has a newfoundland... sweet puppy - but damn that pup can shed like nobody's business and fling drool about a mile :)

Maleficent ~ yes, I agree completely. The obedience school here doesn’t start taking enrollment until the pups reach 6 months, so I will have to wait a while. But there is no way I am going to let him get away with chewing up my furniture or defecating in the house.

Richielancair ~ I am not sure how much he weighs. The owner gave me his measurements for his neck and chest (so I could get him a harness rather than a collar), but never told me how much he weighs. She said that if he takes after his father, and so far that seems to be the case, he will weigh about 6 kilo when he is done growing. I’ll find out his weight and whatnot when he has his first vet visit. Amazing that your small dog is turning 20, what kind is he? I know smaller dogs live a bit longer, but wow.

Mjbelkin ~ he does look like a sweet heart, he is probably going to be a little terror. I am still looking forward to it. And yes, great danes are so cuddly and friendly! I don’t know why my husband doesn’t like them. Probably just limited experience with them.

Madness ~ I’ll take a look at the dog walkers club when I get back (I'll miss my train if I sit here too long). I am looking forward to having a companion who can whine at me if I hesitate to go on a walk ;)

Not looking forward to the potty training, but I have set up the kitchen (he is kitchen raised) in such a fashion that it should limit how tough it is to clean up any accidents. Here's hoping. Anyway, I am off to catch my train.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

But there is no way I am going to let him get away with chewing up my furniture or defecating in the house.

What about going pee-pee in the house? My sister in law has one of those dogs and he pisses every 15 seconds whether he needs to go or not. It seems to be a trait shared by many small breeds. My sister in law loves that dog so we put up with him but I absolutely hate the fact that he accompanies her on every visit and pees all over my house.

^ Wow. Submission or excitement urination is a big issue with some dogs. I fostered dogs that did that. I NEVER took them into someone else's house. That's just asking for trouble...

There are few ways around it if not absolute cures if that is an issue. It's one of the more annoying dog traits I've ever come across though!

I have a Peke! Her name is Izzy. Two years old . She is very smart, but the thing with Peke's is they think they are much bigger than they are, they are not scared to chase after cars, or challenge other dogs. I have a poodle who is 12 also, she can go outside and not run after cars ( although her sight is going and sometimes she gets lost, so we can't let her out by herself anymore:( ) My peke though, she has a fit when she sees a car, she will bark and whine and if she wasn't on a leash she would just run after it!

Also, she is very mean to all dogs except my poodle. I think she tolerates my poodle because she was here when we got her. My sisters dogs can't come over, Izzy always gets into fights with them. She is getting better- but she is a very jealous dog, but very sweet to people.

But... she defiantly thinks she is bigger/tougher than she is. This could get her in alot of trouble hehe. Also, I have read that most Peke's are hard to potty train, at first Izzy was, but now she knows who is boss :p, she will go outside- and if she can't , she goes on the puppy pad. She is very smart but mostly stubborn.

I added a picture of her below, she had just been groomed, she hated the bows though! lol

My aunt recently got a puppy, some people brought them to her work- she couldn't resist. It is a Husky/German Shepard mix. it is SOOO pretty. Such a sweet puppy too. I love big dogs also, I had a Doberman , and a big mutt growing up. We live on a small corner lot now, and have no room for big animals anymore. :( When I was younger we had such a big yard in the middle of nowhere. Oh well, maybe one day I will be able to have the room for a big dog again!

Would you mind sharing your info on cures or ways around that pesky habit? TIA

I have a yorkie, Sir Nigel, and this past Saturday we got a Jack Russell for my daughter. So far so good on the responsibility of taking care of a pet, my daughter is doing a great job with her little "Luna" and Nigel is warming up to her. Good luck with your new addition.

Good luck with your new puppy! He is really cute and nicely named :). I have a little chihuahua/terrier mix. Her name is Spaz... she really lives up to her name lol. She pees when she is nervous and it has really been good for me when I am mad at her because I HAVE to calm down. If I don't I wind up with a puddle that I have to clean up lol. Those puppy pads are excellent as small dogs may have to go more often. When we are gone we keep her in a room with one and she is very good at using it. Dogs are so much fun. I am a converted cat person (I acquired cat allergies and had to give my kitty away) and am pretty picky about my dogs. Spaz is very good for our house and good for me!! :D I hope you guys enjoy yours:)

Thank you for all the well-wishing, so far so good. We had a 3-hour train ride to get home Sunday and considering how he had been in the car (whining, crying, trying to leap out of his puppy bag, and getting car sick :( ) I felt he did really well. He wasn’t sick and the whining was minimal. There were a lot of people and the train stopped every 20 minutes or so, which meant lots of noise and movement. He ended up on one of the pull-down trays from the passenger seat in front of me and managed to doze off; I think he liked it better than the puppy bag because of how warm it was on the train, and how cool the tray was under his belly.

JudyB ~ right now he is young, so the signal for the potty break being needed and the time until it comes out isn’t very long and really a puppy can’t hold it for that long, either. This should change with time. With that said, however, he does pee quite often. Not as often as your sister in-law’s dog, but often enough that he isn’t taken outside each time. The breeder trained him to pee on a towel she had in her house and we are slowly making said pee towel smaller and smaller, and when it gets small enough we will put it into a litter box, and eventually remove it so that he is only using the litter box. That way if he has to pee while inside, at least it’s not on my floor. Pekingese also prefer peeing somewhere that their urine can be absorbed (e.g. a towel or a carpet); they do not like to pee on solid floors. The one time my little guy has done this (in our bathroom, my husband had unintentionally closed him in there while he was taking a shower) he pulled a hand towel over to his puddle of urine. It was strange, but hey, a dog that cleans up after itself isn’t a bad thing ;)

Aleeluh~ Izzy is beautiful, I just love how cute the breed is. He doesn’t like when I clean his face, in fact he usually manages to squirm out of my grip, any tips on helping him get over this? I don’t want him getting an infection in the folds of his skin or anything and I know the breed is prone to it. Did you groom her yourself? Or was she professionally groomed? She is just adorable. And yes, I have read that pekis think they are much bigger than they really are. So far Khan is afraid of cars, but motor bikes and pigeons he wants to chase. I don’t let him out of his puppy bag when we go out, though, not unless it’s to our play yard or the potty area. Once he has had his vet visit Thursday I will start taking him to the park once a day and try to get him used to other people. He is friendly and all, but needs to learn that not everyone wants to play, wants to be licked, or wants to be chewed on. Animals he has no problem with, the breeder we got him from had quite a few dogs of all different breeds and they were all very social with each other; his only problem is he thinks that they are all friendly. Just glad I have had him in the puppy bag because a few times dogs walking the opposite way have reacted badly to him.

Sorry for the late reply. I have Izzy groomed professionally. She is so much trouble with being groomed, I give her baths - but noway I can groom her. Short faced dogs hate being messed with around there face, makes them feel smothered! I know this is the case with Izzy, and I read its the case with alot more Peke's.

I am looking into getting Khan groomed. I went ahead and did my best to clip and buzz the hair around his butt so that there isn't as much fur when he does his business :ack2: , it was a battle and a half. I haven't been able to get to the fur on the pads of his little feet, I only got one of them and he had an absolute fit. I just couldn't hold him! As to his face, he needs it clean so my hubby agreed to help me wipe it down today. I am preparing myself for a very angry puppy.

Two days ago, a puppy ( well, a lab who is a little older but still young, so she is bigger.) Appeared in our back yard. She is black. We thought someone had lost her, so we have been trying to find her owners for two days, we called the party line, radio stations, vets.. everything.. this is a small town and noone has claimed her. She has been on our back steps the past 3 days. My mom has informed me if noone claims her, we are keeping her.. LOL.. My mom hated me having dogs, but she loves this lab so much. She really is a sweet big puppy. I will include a pic below :)

btw, thats the leash she was found on, so weird. We couldn't figure out where to put her so she doesn't run toward the road. We thought someone would be here to get her. Now she just sits on our back porch w/o the leash, and she doesn't go toward anything! She is so good. She knows how to sit and shake. She is defiantly someones puppy.

She is definately a sweet looking puppy.

Hmmm I wonder what happened to her owner. Do you suppose she is from another nearby town and just got lost? Does she have an ID chip? If so, you should be able to get it scanned and see who she belongs to. I wonder why no one would report her missing, though, sounds strange.
