Hi. I'm glad to have found this site. I am 71 years old, female, and for the last two decades have been suffering from something called psychotic depression. I used to be a slim 8 st 4 lbs, but when I was put on high doses of medication my weight ballooned to 12 st 10 lbs.

As my illness is now in remission, thank goodness, I am looking for ways to lose weight. I'm afraid I am fairly sedentary, apart from walking to the shops, but don't want to join a gym. Recently I have joined Slimming World in the hope of getting now to a target weight of 10 st.

Thank you for reading.

Welcome to the forum.

Its great that your illness is in remission so you have a chance to think about your weight.

Walking is a wonderful form of exercise... It is something that you could extend - maybe by walking to a further shop or for pleasure...
I know that one of the ladies on the forum walks a lot as she likes playing golf.
Walking can be really nice in the countryside... My husband and I are members of English Heritage and Historic Houses Association and it can be lovely to walk through the grounds in such lovely places...
In addition to walking - I love to dance.
Anything that makes us move more is valuable exercise.
I wear a pedometer all the time and am sure that it makes me take more steps during the whole of the day than I would otherwise.

I am sure that Slimming World will help you.
We have a lot of good information on exercise and nutrition too... It is particularly worth reading the pinned posts in each section.

Check out the clubs and challenges as they can be good for getting ideas of things to work on and staying on track...

Also start a diary, visit other people's diary, see what they are doing and cheer them on. With luck some people will return the favour and visit your diary.

Good luck with your project.

Thank you for your reply. On the upside my OH and I are taking our bikes on holiday to SW France in a few weeks time. On the downside(?) the lady in the B&B is going to cook us a four course meal every evening. They are only small portions, so I hope I will be able to eat healthily. The cycling should help, and there is a small pool for swimming.

I bought a pedometer last year but couldn't seem to get it working properly. I will get it out of the drawer and try using it again. I agree with you, it's a good idea to use one.

I swear by my pedometer...
Check the batteries and have a go at getting it working...
If it doesn't work it is well worth pursuing... If I cannot sort out something I yell for help... I suggest you do the same...

The holiday sounds fab. With luck the meals will be not too naughty.
Sometimes we can aim to fill up on fruit, veg and salad.
We all deserve however to enjoy ourselves at such times - and if any weight is gained - it will be soon lost on your return if you get straight back on track.
