Hi, all!
I've got to say that I got here by accident but signed on on purpose. There's lots of good info here, and I intend to make use of the expertise and experience of the rest of the members.
So, that said, let me put my biggest problem right out there.
I'm a 57-year-old woman and in decent shape. I've had (and actually use!) a gym membership for a couple of years now, and have lots of equipment at home as well. The problem is this: I've worked hard using mostly nautilus machines and free weights, and I've built considerable muscle, but would like to tone it up still more. I run a horse farm and teach school. The school thing isn't a problem, but I find if I work out hard enough to exhaust a muscle group, I can't do the farm work the next day. Exercising my horses doesn't seem to take quite the amount of muscle strength that hefting hay bales and mucking stalls and the like do, so that's not an issue. I can weight train and still ride.
I realize that it takes 48 hours for muscle to recoup. Is there any solution to this problem, or am I going to be stuck at my current plateau indefinitely? My workout schedule tends to be erratic depending on what I have to do around the farm, but I generally manage to get two good gyms days in a week plus homework in the form of yoga and Tai Bo.
Any suggestions from folks (men or women) who have physically demanding jobs and still want to build muscle would be appreciated.
