From what I understand, sugar alcohol is derived from sugar, and therefore just as bad. I'm not sure, though. You might try googling it.
 
I'd be interested to find out too as I was under the impression that the process of fermenting sugars is what creates alcohol.
 
This is a partial answer I found on Wikipedia. It would seem that they are not as bad for you as plain old table sugar or fructose.
